Is it me or do you need to have a very weird angle to put your face in the middle of the portrait lighting mode circle? I have to almost angle the phone downard to get my face in the circle for it to create the black gackground effect?

Why would it be weird to put your face in the middle? The camera is at the top so isn't it obvious that if you have your phone be parallel and centered to your face it won't put your face in the middle? Isn't it obvious that you would have to either make it not parallel or not centered for your face to be in the middle?

You need to own an iPhone X or 8 to understand what I am talking about. If you take a regular photo or a portrait photo it is not an issue because your face is in the centre of the screen (viewfinder). However, for the two photo modes that place you against a black background, the circle is placed off center towards the top of the screen which makes it ackward to put your face in the circle.

Because it has been generally accepted that framing key elements of your shot at thirds makes the composition better, that's why they advise you to put your head above the center point.

You don't have to do it. You don't even have to shoot faces, it works with any object.
