You just said it yourself, it was flash or other video codecs that caused the problem, which YOU installed. Apple didn't make you download Perian/Divx/VLC. Those programs screwed up the update, not Apple.

And yet I have ZERO issues w/ video playback when booting from my SL install on external firewire drive. Bias is fine, given the audience here, but geez...

Once again, Lion changed something, and the developers didn't do something to prevent it. They had ample time with the whole developer preview program. I'm not saying Apple is perfect; they do make mistakes and when they do you put blame where it is warranted; i.e. MobileMe. The problems Lion has is because the developers are messing with system files when they install applications. It is up to them to fix the problem's not Apple.

I haven't had a kernel panic, and playing HD H.264/MKV/Flash videos, which i do multiple times a day (playing a 30fps H.264 vid right now!), doesn't exacerbate anything either. Smooth sailing.

*shrug*

I will take it one step further. I have Perian, DivX Pro, and Flip4Mac installed. I have never had a microsecond's trouble out of them. In the case of VLC, this player had issues with the audio until I learned of an obscure switch for one its audio codecs. After I flipped the switch, VLC's audio issues disappeared and have not returned. We all know that Flash is a POS. I rarely have an issue with Flash. When I do, then I know who is responsible ... and it is not Apple.

Let me make this clear. I have no fear of codecs. I have most reputable codecs that I know about installed on my systems. As a result, I have no trouble playing just about any media available for download from friends, colleagues, or from various and sundry websites.

In the worst case, the remedy to Flash problems is to logoff and then logon to my account. It is the price that I pay to use certain Flash content. I don't run around cursing Apple because of Adobe's POS and my decision to use it.

Cool, so what you are saying is that we are now supposed to go the old Windows route and reinstall fresh every time there is a patch?

Or

Remove all applications for fear of it crashing the system during a patch and then reinstall?

As a programmer myself, this wouldn't fly where I work. Apple rolled out a patch and it caused problems so yea, it is Apple's fault.

FYI, this discussion about Lion has been going on forever. I ran a clean install of Lion for over a week with no other apps installed and had three kernel panics. SL runs fine on the same hardware. Can you explain that one?

Did you call Apple about the issues you were having with a clean install of Lion?

In fact, how many of you that have had a software issue with Lion have actually called Apple to report the issue?

You know, I am getting tired or explaining myself to everyone that thinks they know better.

Yes, and they stated it was a known bug and they were working it. Also, I file regular bug reports with them. I have even sent dumps to them. So, Apple confesses that there are bugs, they post it in their release notes yet I am a dumb user.

There are many known issues with Lion and Apple is well aware of them. Are there some issues that are caused by people, sure, but many of the complaints that I have seen are not user driven, they are produced by Apple.

I am unsubscribing from this thread as it has not been productive and it is clear that some think that Apple is infallible. Nothing is going to change that in their mind and I have made my point.

I think the writing is on the wall. To avoid future problems Apple will allow software installs only from their app store.

Of course even then it will be impossible for them to check all possible combinations, but at least if they control everything that is installed on their computer they have a better chance of catching most bugs.

I hope I am wrong. . .

As a IT professional I have to say that you are off the mark. 10.7 is full of bugs and the first patch they release doesn't fix problems but rather introduces new features. Then another patch comes out that doesn't fix any of the major problems either. Now the third is out and it is crashing systems.

10.7 was not ready for release yet they pushed it out the door. My macbook, that was rock solid on 10.6, now has kernel panics and two people I know had their systems crash during the update to 10.7.3 and they are IT people as well. These were not "custom" systems, they were normal fresh installs.

So, does Apple have a problem? Yes, Lion has been crap and it looks like it still is.
WOW, your an IT guy? Aren't you special... doesn't mean SQUAT bud! Glad your OS got hosed, mine didn't.

Wow! Someone please point me to where I ever said Apple was infalliable. Glad you called Apple. Hopefully your issue will get worked out. I do have one more suggestion for you. Have you tried DiskWarrior yet? DiskWarrior can do repairs that Disk Utility can't. I have used DiskWarrior in the past and it has resolved issues for me.
