I would think about it after they update it. I wouldn't buy the first gen, the features will greatly improve (obviously they always do, but Apple will take what's missing and what people are complaining about and fix it.). I think that it has great room for improvement and could see myself buying one down the road, just not today.

It should come down in price, but I don't think it will since there is a $400 iPod touch and Apple would be afraid of nobody buying that. (even though people would for portability) And with all that space in there, why doesn't it start at 32gb? And why is adding a 3G chip $130?

I was in line on day one for an iPad, but I agree that it is more of a luxury item, IF you have a laptop that you gives you a lot of productivity. For typing on the go quickly, the laptop just can't be beat.

But for primarily consuming media, the iPad is a real improvement over laptops in general. Most people like to multitask at home while they're watching TV, listening to music, etc. The iPad suits the need perfectly, and really is fun to use, and many of the apps make having to type on the virtual keyboard unnecessary.

I've never minded lugging around my 15" MBP until the iPad spoiled me. Now, I divide up a lot of tasks between the iPad and iPhone that used to be handled on the laptop, and the MBP is being fired up less and less.

The next gen iPad will be even more productive, and I think then the choice between laptop and iPad will get a bit more serious.

1. Can't afford don't buy. Should of stopped there =)
No, he probably could afford but, has common sense when buying his merchandise. Rather than just paying attention to the trendy brand name.

It's a little too easy to sound snobby.
3. Yes it has a glass multitouch display but it is not an iPhone/ipod Touch. There are things you just wouldnt do on the small device which makes sense on the larger device. The OS is similar but they have made really good use of the space by changing the menu layouts etc, they've paid a lot of attention in those areas.
"Let's move stuff around on the home screen and PUT A BIGGER SCREEN!"
That is how that meeting went, I'm guessing.
What wouldn't you do on the smaller device? Read a book? It's easy, its called buying a book. And I bet there is "an app for that" for the itouch or iphone.
Everything about it is the same. Its just larger.

The fact that you can put this list together means you're probably not in the same market as what Apple was aiming the iPad for. Oh well maybe next time.
Aiming for? I bet they think everyone is a bunch of drones and obsessively follow apple. They thought of another way for people to buy a product they don't really need whilst helping their at&t counterpart. Good job apple!

1) YOU can't justify the price. Others can.
Justify it. I would love to hear it.
3) YOU have an iPod touch. Also, as others have pointed out there is so much you can do on a larger screen that you can't on a smaller screen. I'd much rather an iPad to write a document on then an iPod touch.
ALOT of people have an ipod touch. OR at least an iphone.
If you want to write a document, its called a computer, use it.

So you're basically telling us why YOU didn't buy one... Which while ever so interesting is somewhat pointless.[/QUOTE]
He is entitled to his opinion that I happen to agree with.

My question is, why pay half the price of a macbook, for a third of its power? The hardware doesn't add up to the price. And with the new tablets coming out with droid software, it makes those millions look like dopes.

I already knew I wanted one after seeing the keynote - I had several reasons to want one, and since getting it, I still use it for most of those reasons.

My sister and her husband, on the other hand, are the types who don't do all that much on the computer. They have a nice desktop system with Vista and plenty of memory. I showed them my iPad on launch day, and within hours, my sister had to have one, so we went back out to the Apple store and she bought one.

Fast forward from launch day to about 3 days ago, when she told me that they have barely touched the computer, other than to charge the iPad and sync/backup everything back to the desktop.

They just find the iPad more useful, more portable and easier than using their desktop machine which technically should be more powerful and faster.

It just depends on what your needs and wants are.

My sister and her family ended up with 2 64GB iPads and they were using a terribly old Dell (like 6 years+). From what I understand it's the same thing. Between the 2 adults and 2 kids, someone is always using them for something.

I see people overreacting about something that irrelevant imo.

Some will enjoy the ipad, and for them, it's worth the money they paid. Who cares about the reason. There is no need for justification: want it? can afford it? buy it.

I find a ferrari -yeah, car stuff- pointless to use on the road, but some people will be able to buy one and, for them, the pleasure will be worth the money even if they could have reached the same speed limit -legal speed limit I mean- with any other car. I don't see why they should come and justify TO ME what they do with their money, that's just oversized ego IMHO.

That's the attitude i find slightly shocking with some users since the iPad's release. They come as the owners of unbreakable truth and, basically, end up expressing that anyone disagreeing with them is a moron in something as subjective and personal as "user experience and pleasure" is.

And by the way, I wold ask to all those people arguing about utility if all the gadgets they own have been bought only for their utility. Allow me to doubt it.

Anyone can have its opinion, and defend their point of view, but hell, some should buy some iHumility.

Personally, and to stick to the topic, I will get an iPad when I will be able to do all my day to day simple tasks on it as I would do on the computer, and let this one just for the serious stuff. That means, esentially, multitasking, and a couple more of things, which will eventually push me to the 2nd gen at least, and if then I'm not convinced, then I'll pass until the next gen. As simple as that.

A more interesting topic would be "Reasons to buy an iPad". I'd greatly appreciate if you could help me understand why this device has sold millions.

The game "Plants vs Zombies" is so much better on a touch screen that you will never ever want to play it with a mouse again.

I can also imagine that board games will have a huge renaissance on the iPad.

Other than that, the thing is a nice surf board for the bed room.

If I owned a restaurant, I'd probably put my menus, ordering and billing system on the iPad.

There's probably a lot of stuff that the iPad's FORM FACTOR and it's multi-touch display are great for, but I doubt that most of them will have anything to do with traditional computing tasks. A lot of stuff that was usually done on paper, however, can easily be shifted to it.

For geeks and hard-core computer users, the iPad will either be just a toy or completely useless. For casual users, non-geeks and our grand parents the iPad will be the first computer that they are willing to use at home - mostly because it doesn't feel like a computer AND because they are not afraid that they can do anything wrong and break the software on it.

Prepare for hyprocrisy...

You argue back that someone is entitled to their opinion, so why should anyone justify it to you? They are entitled to their opinion, even if you disagree with it.

Where's the hypocrisy? Why keep your justification to yourself? I respect your opinion but, try not to be a mindless sheep following the next computer fad.

So the point is, there is no justification for it because people just bought to be the first with it.

Reasons I Bought an iPad:

1. I have a bookshelf full of fiction books, and developer books. Guess what? I ePub'd them and they now reside on my iPad. No more huge bookcase.

2. I read and the iPad is really awesome to read on.

3. I move around a lot, and when I am going out to my friends house or something, I take my iPad with me, instead of my bulky bag with my MBP.

4. I store all my client info into my iPad.

5. I have a ton of DVD's on my iPad.

6. I use my iPad more than my MBP now.

----------------
I use it more than my iPhone, thus is why I am not upgrading to the iPhone 4 right now.

Depends

I was in Line the first day to get a iPad, got the 64 gb. I don't consider it a luxury item at all. I don't own a smartphone, a MB, MBP. Or any laptop for that matter. The iPad is perfect for what I need it for. Surfing, emailing, games, books, music, i don't have cable so it is kinda cool to rent movies on the iPad and use componate iPod cables to watch them on my tv. I agree that if you have a laptop and a smartphone, lugging a iPad around seems kinda stupid. Rich boy over kill:)! There are some people who don't own laptops, and don't like laptops. I love my iMac. I like the experience of desktop computing. The iPad appealed to me, as the perfect portable solution for me. For when I would look stupid lugging my iMac around all the time.
