Reasons to jailbreak iPhone 4?

I would think that Apple would sell themes in the iPhone store. Seems like many that jailbreak do so for the themes, and I can't figure out why apple wouldn't want to make $$$$ on these.

Anyone else have reasons why they would not?

I guess an equivalent is what happened when we went from OS 9 to OS X. Theming used to be rampant on OS 9, but when Jobs took over and brought OS X to the public, they basically got rid of a lot of the hooks to allow for theming.

Sure, you can do it in OS X, but not as much as you used to be able to in OS 9.

So, use that as a guide.

SBSettings (so much easier to turn on/off BT, wifi, 3g, etc)
3G unrestrictor (facetime calls over 3G. then i might actually use FT!)
Mobile Scrobbler (real time scrobbling for last FM)
Winterboard (i still like custom icons and carrier logo)

in that order.

I am sure there are a lot of unforeseen consequences with theming that are making Apple not pursuing this venue. Perhaps an issue might be the difficulty to maintain and control custom codes once developers are let loose outside the "sandbox".

Other than the given tethering and winterboard:

- Notifier - it was HUGE for me, letting me know when I have a text or e-mail when I'm on other screens... not being on the home screen all the time but having a reminder was key
- SBSettings - easy access to Wi-fi and bluetooth toggles made it so much easier
- Activator - shortcuts to access certain apps, such as swiping the status bar or shaking the phone to activate camera, e-mail, or text, was such a convenience

X 2.

Notifier is the first app I usually install after jailbreaking, WinterBoard is next....

Then, MCleaner and FireWall IP.

I don't do any cracked apps, either through Cydia or the App Store. Yeah, I'm in the minority there, but just want to point out that just because the App Store exists, there's more apps that could legitimately exist if Apple wanted them too.....and people would pay for them.

SBSettings
Winterboard
BossPaper
Status Bar Notifier

Those are really all I used the JB for on my 3GS. I might try messing around with 3G Unrestrictor again, though I never did get it to function correctly (it crashed every app I had associated with it.)

  • Safari Download Manager
  • dTunes
  • Installous (even if its just to sample apps to see if you want to spend the $ on them)
  • SBSettings

I need my iphone 4 jailbroken!!

Besides tethering (I'm on 2gb/month), what are some reasons to JB the iphone 4?

What kind of apps are so amazing that you should do it?

iOS4 hasn't obsoleted any of the reasons for jailbreaking, with the possible exception for some people of Backgrounder and Winterboard. Even those two apps have only had a part of their functionality implemented by iOS4, so many people will still want the JB apps.

iOS4's multi-tasking functionality doesn't support every possible type of multi-tasking that people might want, and it also doesn't work for apps where the developer hasn't explicitly added support for it, so Backgrounder will still be useful for many people.

iOS4 now supports custom wallpapers, so if that's all someone was using Winterboard for, then they might not need it any more. However Winterboard supports much more extensive customization, so people who like customizing their phone's appearance will still want Winterboard.

Most other JB apps, such as iBlacklist, Terminal, SSH, SBSettings, 3G Unrestrictor, MyWi, PDANet, QuickScroll, etc, are still just as useful as before.

EDIT: I forgot about folders. I would say that iOS4's folders feature does obsolete the Categories JB app. That's the only one I can think of.

3G Unrestrictor as well.
I used this before on 3.13 and had to "purchase" it(from Cydia) same as Infinidock(after making Paypal payment i got a message that it works with >IOS4?) in order to added to my jailbroken 3G/IOS4/ Redsn0w. When I try to launch it, it crashes? Anyone else have this problem?

No, works fine for me. I purchased quite a while ago, and it installed fine under 4.0. And works.

How could I have forgotten YourTube. love that app.

Did my post get deleted? I could've sworn I posted in here yesterday. -_-;;

I would jailbreak my iPhone 4 for...

  • SMS Themes (iMilk = ♡)
  • Alert Tones

I hope Cydia/Blackra1n(unless a better version comes out)/Winterboard will make a comeback for the iOs4/iP4 soon. Once my warranty expires I'm going to try jailbreaking again. Just for those two listed above. :) Getting quite bored of the default alert tones/sms themes. Patiently waiting!

It IS amazing, by far my favorite app that I miss dearly on my 4. Sadly, it isnt' ios4 compatible yet. Hopefully it will be by the time the 4 jailbreak comes out.

Ahem...

iRealSMS 3.0.4.0 for iOS 4

With iRealSMS 3.0.4.0 now out of beta after some days of hard bugfixing and live at BigBoss we are compatible with iOS 4.0!

:D:D:D

My reasons for jail breaking are for call blocking, SMS filtering and the ability to password protect individual apps rather than the entire device .

i really miss quickreply and quicksend
sbsettings

the speed and zero lag makes the wait bearable for now

Probably the first two things I will install on my (future) iPhone 4, SBSettings and iRealSMS. Backgrounder will probably go on as well for those apps that don't background natively in the new OS.

Oh yeah! LockInfo would be first!

I know I posted yesterday saying it worked fine for me, but I have to change that info now. After installing the latest update to 3G Unrestrictor yesterday the app is now crashing at startup for me. Apps already unrestricted continue to work, I just can't unrestrict new apps. I've sent an email to the author about the problem.

EDIT: Is there a jb app that would allow me to save login info for my uni's wifi network? It's the kind of thing where you load a page on safari and are redirected, not a direct pass on accessing the network. So I have to enter it every time...a jb would be worth it it to fix this.

Nothing good enough to lose compatibility with updates that are bound to roll out.

If Apple would only sell the phone with the baseband unlocked and give us root access with the ability to run our own arbitrary unsigned code then I don't think I'd even want to jailbreak.

Thats asking for A LOT from apple. It would be like asking Steven to let you have his kids, to him anyway...
