Going to pick up one of the latest generation Time Capsule or Airport Extremes. Probably going to go the refurbished route to save some money. It seems the Time Capsule is only $50 more than the Airport Extreme. Any downside to the Time Capsule? Seems worth it for that amount. Thanks.

Wouldn't apple have checked the hard drive as part of their refurb process?

I got a refurbished Time Capsule last year, not had any issues with it yet.

it's way cheaper to get the refurbished airport extreme and hook a back-up drive to it via USB. That's my set up and it works pretty well.

Does time machine work as seamlessly if you hook up an external drive versus just using a time capsule?

Last March I purchased a Refurbished latest generation 2TB TC from the Apple On-line Store and I am one "happy camper"!

Why??; Excellent Wi-fi connections to my MM and Apple TV in the next room(s), No-effort Time Machine capability; More External HD Space that I will ever use and if need-be I can connect an external HD to the TC; my Applecare on my Mac Mini can be applied to my TC, etc.,etc.

I'm picking up one of these two as well, to replace my 2nd generation Time Capsule. My fear is that it's been over two years since these have been updated. I'd hate to pick one up and then a new generation be released soon after. I guess it's an unavoidable predicament.

I purchased a refurb time capsule, but it arrived with the hard drive broken. I had used a visa gift card, which would have made it a hassle to return. Instead, it was covered under my AppleCare, and I got it fixed that way instead.

I would go with the AirPort Extreme and add the hard drive via USB, unless you need the compact setup having it all-in-one using a time capsule.

Yeah.. it works seamlessly. I haven't had to do anything since I set it up and it backs up my mac mini and my macbook.

Like the poster above me said, if you need the compact setup then you could just go with the TC, but I've found it works well with mine. My HD is set up to work with time capsule though.. I think it's a western digital drive, but I don't have it in front of me right now.

The Extreme + USB drive option is completely seamless. I have never had an issue with my Extreme.

I've found for a few years, this setup doesn't delete old backups when external hdd becomes full, and restore from time capsule backup doesn't work.

If I required +500gb storage would get a time capsule next time.

I'm eyeing one of these too. Is it a worthwhile upgrade to go from a 3rd gen TC to the current 6th gen?

The new one has better wifi reception and adds 802.11ac. So if you have any client devices with AC wifi, it is a nice update. Otherwise not so much.

Hi Weaselboy....whats the best non ac tc...might do a refurb or eBay search..capacity not a concern-1TB+ is more than enough.

MD032LL/A MD033LL/A

I would shoot for one of these fourth gen models. The older ones had power supply issues that seemed to make them die young.
