Another vote for Oreck. I've had my XL for 10 years. Not one issue. I was inspired to buy one after seeing them used at several hotels. It has the traditional bag that needs to be replaced, but it's a breeze to do it. It's also a bonus that there are Oreck retail stores all over that you can visit for parts or extra bags.

Another positive is it works amazingly on hard flooring. Also, the extension cord is extra long and good quality. The only negative is the vacuum is loud.

I also have a Dyson cordless. The cordless feature is nice, but the vacuum itself is garbage. It works, but like others have said it requires constant attention. I am forever cleaning the rollers. If they are not cleaned and serviced by me before each use, the rollers stick and don't spin freely.

My wife's family also uses Dyson, but they complain about it all the time. They have the two piece canister version. They are looking to replace it with a Meile.

Miele al the way, it's quiet, powerful, dependable, the best vac one could own.

I used to recommend Sears Kenmore but wonder how long the brand will be around. :( I assume it will live on and be assimilated into something, but who knows about quality?

We bought all new Kenmore kitchen appliances a few years ago. I'm hoping that Kenmore will survive, even if Sears does not, just so there is some place to get service, if needed. Buying new Kenmore now might be risky. Not sure I would do it.

In vacuums or appliances, there's probably not much difference between "best" and "second best" in terms of quality. None are identical, so it comes down to the user, and what features you like best.

for a commercial usage you should consider buying a back pack vacuum. i cant recommend a brand but but contact a cleaning supply house

If it's for an office then I recommend that you go with a commercial grade vacuum. It will get bumped and kicked a few times and commercial grade vacuums can take the abuse. Residential vacuums are flimsy and require more care in my experience.

I tried it out at Costco yesterday. Not bad, but it felt as if the battery was at half its charge life. Which would make for a poor selling strategy. I'm going to try it out again at another store if I see it. MetVacs are solid products, but as I stated before, they're very heavy due to their nearly-all metal construction. It would be nice to have something lightweight and probably not get as hot as the MetVacs. Durability is an issue.
