You are not alone. Hulu with no commercials reduced the amount of shows I was recording by about 60%. I also use CBS All Access for some shows. But I still have Live TV mainly because I do not live alone.

The CBS thing has me torqued. I could actually jump the DirecTV ship with that channel but I'll be damned if I pay $72 a year for it. What a freakin scam.

Any cord cutting solution will fail for people who want a constant drip feed of content on their TV. It succeeds for people who watch light to moderate amounts of content each night. We watch about <90 mins of content most evenings and absolutely love the AppleTV for our viewing habits. In general I don't want "channels". We use Netflix, Amazon Prime (AirPlay), HBO Now (only when GoT is airing). For the rest I buy session passes to the shows. There is plenty of live news content on the AppleTV, but frankly if I want news, I turn to the Internet. I dont care about live sports. As of right now, I can't think of anything I want to watch that I can't easily access from the device cheaper than if we had cable.
We have been cable free in our house for years. At this point my wife would refuse to connect a cable box even if it were free (This is not an exaggeration. We have had this conversation).
I consider my habits perfectly in line with Apples vision, so it works great for me. However I fully understand that it may fit as well for others.

Comcast is the worst company and service in the history of the world. It's so bizarre you made a post tooting it's horn whilst trying to throw Apple TV under the bus.
You are correct about Comcast customer service and pricing. But the X1 platform is awesome. It's really the best interface for cable I've ever used. The voice search is accurate and system wide.

Technically, there's no such thing as cord cutting.

Sure there is, just stop wasting your time watching TV. :D When I moved here 10 years ago there was no cable TV, and there still isn't today. I used to watch many hours of cable before then, but decided to see how much I missed it before getting a satellite dish. 10 years later, I still don't miss it, still don't have cable, still don't have a dish.

My only internet option is slow DSL so I don't use streaming. I built a large DVD/bluray library over the years, and have ripped them all into iTunes. Aside from the small number of iTunes movies that I downloaded and stored locally, my cord was cut 10 years ago. Best thing that ever happened to me. :)

I understand the initial resentment. But, for me I just look at the numbers in total. You say you could drop DirecTV but you do not want to pay $72 per year to CBS. I assume DirecTV is so much more. The combination of CBS and Hulu gives be 80-90% of what I use to DVR. Of course Hulu gives me so much more the only double the cost of CBS but I need it. I use Hulu with no commercials ($12). I compare this to the savings of the FIOS Hardware which was costing me 10x the cost of CBS.

I have a Samsung 4K SMART TV and an Apple TV 4. I never use the SMART apps, only the Apple TV.
My father has a Sony 4k SMART TV and an Apple TV 3. He never uses the Apple TV, only the SMART apps.

To each of his own.

I bought a new Sony smart TV, the built in Netflix player stutters and pauses. The Sony App Store is a joke and does not even have HBOgo or Showtime so I use the Apple TV instead of the smart features of the television. There is no comparison for me.

I agree. I also prefer the ATV 4.
I don't know why my father prefers the SMART apps over the ATV. Yes, he has a previous gen ATV with no App Store but he could easily get the 4th gen but he just does not want to. Mind you, he has a rMBP and a 6 Plus so he has no hate for Apple. Lol.

Agreed each user has their own prospective. i also have a Samsung smart TV and use it quite a lot. One less device and remote control, all the Apps i need including Amazon, Plex, Netflix, iplayer 4OD utube etc. and guess what I can also run Skype which makes overseas calls with family more immersive. I am not really a gaming person but with the family around at Christmas they were playing Pictionary on the TV with a mixture of Android and Apple phones.
My Samsung also support voice input for most functions.
