Not sure where else to post this. Last week I ordered a Mac Studio M4 Max 64GB 4TB. In the Apple Store app it was expected on the 17th but it showed up yesterday, four days early.

I haven’t fully migrated to this but so far everything is going very well. I’m migrating from an i9 iMac 2019. One issue I’ve had is one piece of software I use is only for Intel so I need Rosetta. FCPX, Affinity apps, Graphic Converter all downloaded and installed without incident.

I talked to the Backblaze people and they said I can inherit my backup going from i9 to M4. As long as it stays on the Mac platform I’m good.

GeekBench single core 4071 multi core 26316. Everything feels snappy.

Mine came 5 days early. I was shocked by the delivery. I would have migrated but I was on a 2017 iMac Pro and that machine was migrated from a 2012 Mac Pro which was migrated from a 2009 iMac. I wanted to do a clean install (but with iCloud). None of my x86 virtual machines worked and I had to create ARM versions. Took me around 8 hours to get it semi-working.

Similar thinking here. I will slowly copy over the data files from my iMac. I looked through the list of apps and found that I’m using fewer apps, partly because some of the older apps I used to use are no longer available. This is a good chance to start fresh.

I’m amazed at the speed. Almost everything I click on pops up immediately.

I, like OP, came from a 2019 i9 iMac but upgraded to a base M3 Ultra with 2tb ssd. I decided to do a fresh install because 99% of my files rest on external hdds and ssds. My backblaze backup was inherited just fine, just took a little time for it to complete.

The only noise I have heard out of mine is I did get the fans to ramp up while transcoding Nikon 8k60p Raw files to 4k ProRes422 in DaVinci Resolve. IStat Menu showed that it used nearly 100% of those graphics cores to do the job just a bit faster than real time. I think some fans ramped up when doing some Lightroom AI denoise on a bunch of photos too but other than that not a peep or whistle.

Are you going to install any LLMs on this thing? More than a few of us are interested to know if, at 64GB with an M4, you can run a 70 billion parameter model. The answer is maybe, because you do have enough memory to store a ~ 45 GB model, or at least I think you do.

In other threads, Studio users posted some very informative graphs and videos concerning the M4 Max and M3 Ultra capabilities with the 400+ GB models. You really need the Ultra at 512GB to run the big ones.

Given the default limit on GPU access to RAM, which for the 64GB Studio will be 48GB or so, which sounds like enough for a 43GB model, but you have to remember the importance of context for models to generate your answer.

For example, I want to put in a large PDF (of scientific literature), and on my memory-limited Intel Mac I can't get models to read past the first few pages.

The reason I am convinced if I go the M4 Max route is that I'll need 128GB is because I want to examine such large data.

Every time I see a Geekbench single core result from an M series machine its a reminder of just how fast they are.

The M4 single core score is 25% or more faster than the multi core score of my old i7-1060GN MacBook Air 2020.

Well that last generation of Intel MacBook Airs were dogs.

I really would like an M4 Max Mac Studio… but my M2 Max model (64GB of RAM and a 1TB SSD) is less than 18 months old - and Apple will only give me $935 for it as a trade-in. I can’t justify it this time around. Maybe when the M5 Max or M6 Max version comes out. But these are excellent machines.

Right now no I cannot control the fans. I also get a message from iStat Menu saying that my model is not supported at this time and an update should be soon.

TG Pro lists the M4 and M3 Studios as supported models
The fans in M4 gen Macs seem to be harder to be controlled, it took TG Pro months to push an update that can do that for the M4 MBPs and minis, I think the update was out only last week. But yeah they list the M4 Max Studio being supported now.

For iStats, traditionally it takes weeks after new Macs drop for them to update sensor and fan control together.

OK Thanks...

My M4 Max Studio was delivered yesterday. TG Pro does NOT presently allow me to control my fans... Hopefully next update?

You sure you got the latest 2.96 installed? The update dropped only like 2 days ago. They even posted a screenshot showing the M3 Ultra sensors working.

If it is already the latest but still does not work, maybe get in touch with the devs so they can look into it.

Can't wait for mine. 16/40-core M4 Max with 64GB and 2TB SSD. It's currently listed as "preparing to ship" so I'm guessing I'll have it by week's end (if not well before).

I'm just going to plug my M3 Max MBP (current machine) into it over a TB4 cable and use Migration Assistant to clone my current machine.

And you have to install the helper app for fan control to actually work
