The title is pretty self explanatory. I've been hearing good reports and bad reports about updating the software like the EFI firmware update etc etc..

Of course! Update everything in the list. There are really only a handfull of people having trouble with that one update and there are tons more who haven't had any problems, it's why they are not posting about it.

It's a brand new notebook, even if you did have problems, you could exchange it.

There are some pretty critical updates in the Software Update menu, so I would. If there are some updates you're not sure about just un-check the box.

I am worried about going from 10.4.9 to 10.4.10

I wouldn't worry, however, you may wish to update all of the other updates, and THEN run the 4.9-4.10 update.

I've run all the other updates. It just seems like many people have had problems going to 10.4.10

Well if you don't want to update don't then. If you really don't want to read what the update does and if that doesn't do it for you, skip the update.

I got a new MBP the other day, it already had the new EFI firmware, only 10.4.10 that was available.
