Receiving iMessages when app isn't running?

Is something wrong on my end, or is there no kind of notification in Mac OS X when you receive an iMessage unless the Messages app is open? I only get a notification when the app is running - if I have to remember to have the app running to receive messages, that's a lot less useful. Since you can receive FaceTime calls even when the FaceTime app is offline, I thought Apple would implement Messages similarly.
