the wording in the article pretty clearly suggests that it is related to ios15:
With the recent release of iOS 15, Apple appears to have made some changes to Siri functionality that have removed features relied on by low vision and blind iPhone users.
Related to “release/introduction/appearance” of iOS 15. Not because of iOS 15 directly. Article is still right (even though it might suggest a particular culprit).

It’s not a bug, don’t worry. Vision-impaired and blind users can purchase the new Apple ‘Special Siri’ that will provide those much-needed commands for people that depend on them most. Cost is only $79.99 per month, or you can upgrade to ‘Super Special Siri’ for $129.99 per month. In addition to that critical functionality that Special Siri provides, Super Special Siri allows users to say, “Siri, open the Apple online shopping site”.
*You must have an iPhone 13 to use this.

”This revolutionary change to Siri will result in less money in your bank account, making it far easier to manage” says Apple CEO Tim Cook.

Yet more useful stuff that Apple keeps removing in the name of "improvement."

It's very possible that this is a glitch that will be resolved. Users don't truly appreciate just how complex and advanced this stuff is.

The headline on this article is giving people the wrong conclusion, without any proof that Apple "did" something deliberately.

I suspect these capabilties will be restored, or Apple will give an explanation about why they no longer work. Maybe a privacy concern that needs to be addressed through a software update.

So they just straight up removed functionality and made Siri less useful. Cool.

Voice recognition is based around Machine Learning databases that map intents to actions. It's very likely this mapping became broken somehow, so it will take Apple a bit of time to fix this.

But, hey, in the meantime, let's just blame Apple for doing something deliberately. That's far more satisfying.

What is happening to Apple?

Pretty much exactly what has been happening since the moment SJ first began reducing his role at Apple for health reasons. Things only got worse with his death. It's been a slow slide towards utter mediocrity in many regards. Sure, there are bright spots here and there, but in nearly every way that matters to end-users the once unassailable Apple ecosystem is collapsing as fast as our actual ecosystem! Unlike many persons who work in the computer-industry, I'm hands-on with end-users for about 75% of my work; so I've seen this degradation with 'different eyes' than most. Apple removing key features for the Blind doesn't surprise me, not in the least.

this is what happens when Apple's aspirations are more geared to be like Hollywood and less about making the best products that delight users.

Something I happened to notice is that Siri's voice on iOS 15 is very different, much more like a voice assistant from the early 2000s. With iOS 14, Siri had started to sound a bit more natural. But now it's sounding more like old voice mail systems. I wonder if that's because it's now being done on-device instead of in the cloud.

Is Apple using mostly contractors these days? Contractors don’t seem to be as accountable as regulars. Maybe they need to rethink what kind of workforce they hire, one that is more accountable and has way more to lose if they screw up as much as they seem to be doing these days. Plus Apple needs to rethink the bosses as they seem unable to deliver decent software any more. They are rotten to the Apple core now a days!

Are they trying/looking to decommission Siri?

A feature that has been introduced with the release of iPhone 4S

Anyway, I don't use the feature so I'm not affected...

Apple Siri+.

Big fan of Craig Federighi as a presenter and some of the newer software features have been good, but quality assurance has just absolutely plummeted over the last 4/5 years with Apple's software. Do he and his team have a grip on things?
