National Geographic put out an update to their app late last week and it is a terrible change. In the previous versions, you downloaded digital copies of the magazine and the format was really good. With the new update, all previously downloaded issues were deleted from your iPad and now the app is essentially a web-based browser that you use to view articles on-line only – you must now have an Internet connection to view issues. If you cancel your subscription, access to issues you have already purchased is lost, something that didn’t happen when you could download purchased issues. They’re getting hammered in App Store reviews and if you’re also an unhappy user, get in and leave a review and send them feedback at natgeomagazine@cdsfulfillment.com.

In general, it seems like companies don’t want us to have possession of the actual product. They want to keep the products on the cloud or similar.
It’s a PIA to access what I pay for!

Pretty much. It's in their interest to have complete control over it.

It'll only stop when people stop buying into it, but many people these days seem to just go with the flow without thinking too much about it.

It really is a PIA. This was particularly irritating in that they deleted previously paid for content from your device. I also travel a lot to places with poor to no Internet connectivity so the downloads were a necessity if I wanted read the magazines. Seems a bit of an irony here given that it's National Geographic which covers a lot of the world's exotic locations.
