Recently visited sites gone (Safari)

A couple of days ago, the frequently visited sites in Safari disappeared, no sites are coming up. I haven't deleted my history or changed any settings, so I don't know why this is happening (private browsing is off). I'm using an iPhone 5S and had the problem with both 8.3 and 8.4. Is there a setting to turn it on and off?

Do you have any bookmarks (perhaps you had some and deleted them recently)?

No, haven't touched them either. Also noticed the same on my iPad.
