I am having no issues in Columbus, Ohio. In fact, I am getting higher bars in my house where I would get one or none. I've only had the phone for about 30 minutes but I am not noticing any reception issues at all. Placed a call and everything worked very well.

Maybe the Iphone 4 is just better at giving you accurate reception and the 3G and 3Gs was just making up false signals and upping the bars.

+1

my 3gs often shows bars or even full bars and not even a text message is going thru! and ultra slow 3g speeds..

It's these threads that remind me why I don't want an iPhone. While it succeeds at "i" rather well, it seems to fail at "Phone" epically. I figured the 4 would be better but my coworker is sitting in his office now with his phone going in and out of service. He joked he will be the first to return his phone tomorrow while everyone is waiting in line to buy one.

Unfortunately the more Apple changes on the iPhone, the more it stays the same. It's still a god-awful phone.

I don't know if it's AT&T or not, but in his office had a few bars of signal to where now he has no service. I suggested he wait a few days before returning the phone as he might get murdered by rabid fanboys waiting in line to buy one.

it seems like this is a moot point (to me anyway), the real question is - how are actual calls? are they being dropped a lot? How is 3G browsing and all that?

For those of you who aren't happy with your iphone 4, i'll buy it from you for $200 plus shipping :)

Several calls dropped in his office and he had two voicemails pop up on his phone with no ringing. Web browsing isn't all that great but we have wifi in the building to help with that. With wifi off he gets an error about having no data connection if the phone says no service.

The phone is beautiful. It's a shame it just fails at being a phone.

He's a pretty big Apple fan too, he will just go back to his 3GS for the time being. He is going to the AT&T store to have them swap service from his microSIM to his normal SIM so he can use his 3GS again. His job relies on a good phone.

Mine has already dropped a call and won't allow me to make them when the bars are disappearing. Meanwhile my 3gs is at no lower than 3-4 bars when this happens without any interruption of service. A disappointment yes but I figured there would be a kink or two but this seems to be a bit of a bigger kink that I had hoped for. Oh well I guess that's the price for getting them first.

It could also be that the phone is brand new and in the process of hundreds of thousands activating that maybe the service is a tad bogged down.

I would give it a few days before returning if you really hate it.

I've had 0 issues with service. The service LOOKS terrible...going all the way down to one bar, but the call quality is amazing.

antenna grounding problems?

I have been noticing the problem when i hold the phone so that my hand is touching both the wifi and mobile antenna at the same time. I'll pick up the phone with 5 bars, and as I watch the screen bars drop off one by one. This usually takes about 30 seconds. If I set the phone down or hold it by the glass not touching the metal band, bars return slowly. Wifi does not seem to be affected, and the problem still occurs if I turn off wifi. The problem also happens with bluetooth on or off.

Yellow splotches, terrible call reception, anal probes. This is definitely killing any buzz i had for the iPhone 4.

This is certainly not about how the phone is reporting reception. I've never dropped a call in my home office on my 3G, but dropped two already with my iP4. The bars are reporting lower reception and the calls are confirming it.

I use to be able to send texts from my basement, 1-2 bars usually, but now I get Searching and I can't send messages. Seems like its more than just reporting bars because I can't actually use the phone

With the iPhone 3G at my house, I always got 5 bars of 3G and fast downloads/no dropped calls. With the iPhone 4, it stays at 0/1 bars and I can't do anything.

I've tried resetting the network settings, but that didn't seem to do anything. Is it possible that AT&T's network in certain areas is just crazy overloaded and that's causing the problem?

So far no issues here in NYC. Actually my reception is better in my house and office. People saying they are returning after one day are crazy. You got to try a few days to account for the variance

I guess well see how it performs over the weekend but right now it's quite good
