I am trying to reclaim some greyed out space on my hard drive which was vacated due to boot camp. When I drag and extend the partition and click on apply it gives me a

Partition failed with the error: Couldn't modify partition map because file system verification failed.

Any ideas how I can get it back?

Post a screenshot of disk utility in the partition tab. That would really help see the issue.

Are you trying to get rid of your bootcamp? If so, just go back to bootcamp assistant and click the uninstall option.
