Okay, we have:

A Perfect World

Big Fish
Bringing Up Baby
Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind
Fisting Firemen
Funny Games
Garden State
Harold & Maude
Hijo de la novia, El
La Vie En Rose
Le Placard
Life is Beautiful
Little Miss Sunshine
March of the Penguins
Memoirs of a Geisha
Mildred Pierce

Priscilla Queen of the Desert
She Wore a Yellow Ribbon
Something's Gotta Give
Star Trek IV
Super Troopers
The Dish
The Fountain
The Philadelphia Story
The Pillow Book
The Station Agent
Ulee's Gold
Volver

Excellent! Thank you!

Although my biggest fear is that her favourite from that bunch will be Fisting Firemen.

Any movie with Marion Cotillard in it would be watchable. She is that good.

How about a movie that has romance, comedy, violence and a moral lesson?

Death to Smoochy

Yes it has all of those, but its a horrible movie.

Hugh Grant is a drippy actor, but in About a Boy, he's actually very good. I think as the character is so similar to what he's like in real life, the emotional struggle of the character has some impact on him, and makes him more reflective that his usual crappy boy-man cad pretending-to-act schick.

I think your mother would also love Delicatessen.

I've noticed there's a lot of French / classic Euro / New Wave cinema in that list. If your ma doesn't mind subtitles, there's some of the best movies in the world in that direction. A real education in filmmaking as craft and a labour of love.

Couldn't agree more. I was almost embarrassed when I approached the cashier with a "Hugh Grant" flick in my hand.

After watching it, I was almost hesitant to return it without at least one more viewing. Like him or not, the movie was well done and couldn't have had a better cast.

I'd also like to add "Grosse Pointe Blank" to the list. Some violence, but an extremely well acted dark comedy. Minnie Driver and John Cusack had a chemistry you just don't see often.

Subtle, familial bits of comedy, good wholesome story, non-smart-ass kid, Gerard Butler for the ladies... Excellent film.

EDIT: "Dear Frankie"

Bagdad cafe'

Nothing to do with Iraq. A surreal, feel-good drama-comedy, with the right amount of sweetness and one of the best songs ever in a movie.

given what you say she liked, my bet is she'll love it.

i would also suggest
DOWN BY LAW
199316.jpg

a bizarre, slow but poetic and funny jim jarmush movie

Anything by Akira Kurosawa (Seven Samauri, Yojimbo, Ran, etc) , or Hayao Miyazaki (Monoke, Spirited Away etc) or Pixar / Dreamworks? (Shrek, The Incrediables, etc etc)

That's some of the best filmmaking in the world there. Hayao Miyazaki in particular is very good at making films where the 'baddies' are more complex than at first sight.

Quinceanara

The actors are unknown and it was filmed in two weeks. The ending is sort of happy but it's an excellent film nonetheless.

The Secret Life of Words

This movie has a mostly happy ending but the movie is gut wrenching. I highly recommend it. It actually takes place in your part of the globe, well, sort of.

I recommend the Japanese file Shall We Dance. An elderly relative showed this to me, and I thought I would have to sit through it just to be polite. By the time it was over, I could see why she put it on without question; this is a movie that anyone who loves movies will enjoy.

another vote for,

Eternal sunshine of the spotless mind
And Life is beautiful.

two of the best films EVER made, both are wonderful.

although the only film i ever made my mum sit and watch was Shawshank, and she loved it! so i suppose that must also get a vote as well.

That was a very good story, I agree. A similar, albeit quirky story, is Strictly Ballroom. I'd show this one to my mother also.
