I've always stuck with Western Digital drives. Previously though, I had one WD Drive (My Passport) for Time Machine and kept a 1TB Seagate drive to store my movies, music, photography and whatever else. That particular drive only lasted about a year before it randomly failed.
I replaced it with 2 more My Passport drives and also got a 50GB iCloud plan for certain files.
When it comes to SSDs vs regular HDs, I suppose it comes down to what you're planning to store on the drives and how often you'll be accessing whatever it is. I've got a Samsung T5 for my personal laptop that I use to store part of my Steam Library and certain other media. For games, it's ideal. When it comes to music/video files though, I myself can't discern that much of a difference in load times etc.
