I know this thread is as dead as it gets, but I am still on a 2008 mac alu, and thought I should do an SSD upgrade as my current drive is getting well to slow.

What are the developments since the last post - any new advices / new drives that should be taken into consideration. Looking at a min of 256GB, preferably 320 as thats what I have currently. Running 8GB of RAM if that is of any intr, and the latest OSX.

Appreciate all the input I can get,

cheers, trady

Samsung EVO drives work flawlessly too, using one in my late 08 alu and love it.

Fully read as 3Gbps too :)

Cool, thanks for your replies. Regarding the EVO, what do you think, any point in cashing out for the Pro version, would it make any difference ?

I would USe

I got this guy from crucial, easy install and noticable improvement

Crucial M500 480GB SATA 2.5-Inch 7mm (with 9.5mm adapter) Internal Solid State Drive CT480M500SSD1

Absolutely no reason to. I just installed an EVO in my MBP and it's beautiful.

Either of those is fine. Given the SATA speed limitations of your system, just get whichever is cheapest.

I highly recommend the Samsung 840 EVO. I've revamped several Macs for resale and give my buyers the options for a standard drive or the Samsung 840 EVO. Install the drive and download TRIM. Thats all that is needed. Never had any issues, except that you need to format the drive initially. It won't come formatted.

Speed wise, generation wise, I've put the 840 EVO in a Macbook 1,1 all the way up to a 2012 Mac mini, and never had an issue. It works with all. Helps battery life, improves performance significantly, and has the most consistency I've seen from any SSD. Best bang for your buck. MicroCenter/Amazon currently holding the 120 GB model for $79. Can t beat it.

Ssd

Whatever you buy , DO NOT BUY an OCZ!!!!!!! I work as a PC Tech in a hospital where we have 52 mobile computers on wheels with SSD,s they were all OCZ,S
AND BREAK REGULARLY , i have started replacing them with Crucial M4,s which seem to be unbreakable , have not had a Crucial back on the bench in 2 years now :)

update from OP

SO it has been over 7 months now and I have had no issues with my Crucial 480 GB Solid State SATA Drive

Avoid OCZ like the plague!! They have a VERY high failure rate and the worst customer service I have ever seen.

I'm personally a big fan of the Crucial M4 drives. I have only seen one fail and Crucial was quick to replace the drive and get us back up to pace. I really don't think you'll notice too much of a difference between the Crucial and Intel drives.

I would advise AGAINST any Intel SSD in older Macbooks! I have seen several cases on Intel 520, 530 and so on NOT working at "full speed" in older Macbooks. Go for Samsung, Cruzial - or basically most else to get DOUBLE the reading speed, but avoid Intel SSDs!
Please note: This is not a general case against Intel SSD which are super quality - but the firmware/controller simply does not work with the older Macbooks!
