Quick question - how I can use my MacBook's built-in mic and default software that came with it to record a short sound and save it as an MP3 or wav file?

There's always Garageband or you could try some freeware like Audacity

Garage Band will do that.

You have a choice of AAC or MP3 when sharing or Exporting.

ITunes can reencode to WAV, if necessary.
