iPad Recording vocals into an iPad

I want to find a way for a to connect a microphone into an iPad so she can record vocals and mix it Garageband.

1. I'm assuming you can record vocals into Garageband?
2. What do I need to plug a microphone into an iPad or to connect it wirelessly? Can the mic be plugged in directly or does it need a preamp of some sort?

Their products seem awfully expensive. Are there any cheaper alternatives?

I own Blue Snowball Ice mic ($49) and it's been fantastic, but have only used it with Macs (using Logic and Audacity) so far. Hadn't considered trying it with my IPP but will try it this week in GB.
