Beyond trying to repair with Disc Utility I can not think of any free data recovery. Is this an accidentally deleted file or failed hard drive? If it has failed is it making any unusual scrapping or clicking noises?

As for data recovery. Disk Warrior is pretty good but does not do much when it can not find a partition.

If a partition is lost I would try Stellar Phoenix for Mac. This program is more difficult to learn but provides much more powerful data recovery routines. It can look over a drive missing its partition table or that has been reformatted. I have even had some success with drives suffering physical hardware failure. Be aware that damaged drives can take days or weeks to recover data if at all possible.

If you have a Windows PC on hand and the drive is damaged or partitions are lost you could also try Nucleus Kernel. This program is even more thorough than Stellar Phoenix but for some reason the Mac Data Recovery program is only available for Windows:confused:. I could not attest to the Mac specific product but their recovery program for NTFS/FAT32 beat out Stellar Phoenix in my book. On a hard drive with extensive platter surface damage. Though it would take eight hours for about 20 500KB files (not a typo).
