Recover data from Mac Boot disc plugged as an external unit?

Hello, is there a way to recover my data from a mac disc if i connect it as external unit? It says permission denied (since the OS was password protected). The disk is not mine, it's a friend's one. But i'd like to know it too since soon i'm gonna change my hdd with a ssd one and i just want to plug the old one as an external usb unit and browse the content i want to save.

Try this

Select the disk in finder and then right click to 'Get info'

Then select the option in the new window which says

'Ignore ownership on this volume'
