Hi;

I have an important .xlsx file that will not open in excel, says:

Excel cannot open this file.

The file might have been damaged or modified from its original format.

Help!!!

I had something similar happen once. I was able to open the file with OpenOffice https://www.openoffice.org/ and then copy and paste into a new excel spreadsheet.

How big is the file you are trying to open? Click the file in finder, then keyboard command i. Then post what the Size is.

Brilliant this worked, I had to then save the document in Word 97-2000 Format (.xls) but it now opens fine?

Sometimes Excel (2008 and 2011) gets confused if you have multiple window views open on the same document (window menu -> new window.) I now always close the extra windows before I close the document.
