I've been reading around the forum and found info on several file recovery software but I wanted to ask if they actually work? I screwed up and accidentally deleted nine years worth of pictures and other stuff that was on my external hard drive. I downloaded Disk Drill and it "found" my lost files. However I can only recover them if I purchase the full version ($89). Before I take the plunge I want to make sure that I would not be ripped off. Any input, comments or suggestions will be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

$89 would be a bargain for file recovery (if it actually works that is). I have paid a lot more than that to recover important files :(

Thanks sweedefish. So, there are programs that actually work.

So, there's really no way of knowing until I buy it and try to recover the files. I haven't been able to find a local place that does file recovery. I went to a Best Buy and ask about file recovery and the guy (Geek Squad) said that once they were deleted I wasn't going to be able to recover them. I don't think he knew what he was talking about.

Hopefully, you'll be able to recover all of your pictures.

Hoping that this doesn't sound like preaching, but maybe this will be a wakeup call to regularly back up your data. For a small investment ($100 or less) you can buy an external USB drive and copy all of your data on a regular basis.

I just helped my g/f buy a new Mac Mini - mostly for music and pictures - but insisted that she get an external hard disk for backup. She complained about the extra cost at first, until she realized what might happen if the disk failed and she lost all of her photos.

The ironic thing is that I have two other external HDs. I was cloning my MBP data so that I could replace the hard drive with a 500GB one. I thought when it was cloning that it was going to make a folder called back up or something but when I went to use the hard drive I noticed that it had erased all my folders.

I had all my files on the ext HD but moved them to the HD that I accidentally erased.

Thanks for your responses.
