Recovering formatted hdd

Hi,

I mistakenly formatted my external backup drive ( 1 TB ) and put Snow Leopard on it. Couple of hours later my main drive gave errors so I end up with losing all of my photos.

Does anyone know if I can recover my external HDD back? I think for the main drive I need to get in touch with a specialist.

I'd try Disk Warrior on your main drive before I'd pay a specialist. It has worked for me when all else had failed.
