Recovery tools

my Mac recently had to have the HDD replaced, any recommendations for data recovery tools to, hopefully retrieve data on the old HDD.

Recovery is a real hit and miss affair and not cheap. Guess silly to ask if you had an external backup?

Get a USB3/SATA docking station.
Put the old drive into the dock, connect it to the Mac.
What happens next?

Thanks. By 'backup' the Apple time machine had failed unbeknownst to me and when I went to recover from the back up......no files. Oh well.

I'll see if I can get an adapter an just plug it in to the USB and as you say see what happens.
