It may be in part because I'm one of those variations of color blind but for some reason when pictures are predominantly red & black on my computer screen they appear 3D.

For instance...

In this picture the red is furthest back and the outlines of the characters are back too. The only things that are in the front are the prev/next areas, bottom bar, price area, the head crab area and the eyes/mouth. It's as if they are on two separate planes.

It also happens with this desktop wallpaper...

It appears to me as if I could actually grab a flower. Certainly I don't try as I enjoy not breaking my monitors. The flowers appear more 3D instead of just 2 planes like the first image.

I also seem to recall a poster at the car dealership 2 years or so ago that did this similar thing. I even asked the car salesman if it was a 3D poster and he must've thought I was strange (hey I am!). The poster wasn't strictly black and red... can't recall actually. I just remember asking him.

They almost look like those magic eye things... the further I move away from it, the more pronounced it gets. Maybe it's normal. I dunno. I showed the pictures to a couple of friends and they said they didn't see it. Maybe I have a crappy super power.... anybody else see it or have a clue what it might be?

I'll be honest, i can't see the 3D at all, not in the slightest, I haven't got a clue what you're talking about.

:D

You would probably see it better in a larger picture. Red works differently with our eyes than other colors do. Also, keep in mind that a lot of males are colorblind so if you don't see it guys, it's okay. ;)

It's definitely more pronounced when the picture is full size.

i have experienced the same

i can't see the 3d effect in the pictures you posted however i have experienced the same thing. in my case the illusion occurs when i'm comparing red and white slices of text on a black background.

on this site for example (let's hope they don't change it too soon) http://www.creepypasta.com/submit-your-pasta/ the red text looks as if it was impressed and about half a centimeter further afar than the white one.

i'm surprised there isn't more about this to be found on the internet. seems we're really special. step 3: profit.

in case the layout of the site has changed or doesn't work anymore, here's a simple html-code. the height difference is really great in this one, when i look at it.

Code:
<html>
	<head>
		<title>black/white/red-illusion</title>
	</head>
	<body bgcolor = "Black">
		<font color = "white" face = "Arial" style = "Bold">

Duis aute irure dolor in rep<font color = "red">rehend</font>erit in voluptate velit esse cillum dolore eu fugiat nulla pariatur. <font color = "red"> Excepteur sint occaecat cupidatat non proident, sunt </font> in culpa qui officia deserunt mollit anim id est la<font color = "red">borum. </font>
		</font>
	</body>

[doublepost=1482765343][/doublepost]YES!! What's going on with that? I was getting worried until I read your post. I suddenly started noticing it last week, have they changed something on iPhone??

I have the same. Like on this picture:
More than that. I see this effect on the iPhone and iPad with black bezel. So I guess I'd better get the white bezel iPad...

Imo, the top image is 2D but hints of two layers where the red area is in the background because of the sharpness of the outer text areas as compared to the fuzziness of the interior image.
Her dress doesn't look red and black to me at all. It looks white and gold.

White kind of weird monitor settings or color blindness do you have? ;)

I've encountered the same illusion on my Nixeus Vue30 monitor. Seems most apparent with red and black color combinations. See attached screenshot. To me, the middle banner of silhouetted palm trees over a red sky appears to be positioned a bit forward in space from the rest of the graphic.
