I’m wondering if Messages in the Cloud may be activated soon.

On my iPhone 7 running iOS 11.2, I just noticed that upon rebooting my iPhone and entering the passcode right away to unlock the phone upon reboot, there’s a red exclamation point over the Messages icon. The exclamation point goes away on its own after 3 or 4 seconds and sending and receiving of iMessages and SMS messages seems to be functioning normally. I’ve noticed that if I wait for a few seconds before entering the passcode to unlock the phone after booting it up, I don’t see the exclamation point at all.

I reset Network Settings for giggles, but the red exclamation point still appears upon booting the phone and unlocking it right away. Is anyone else seeing this behavior?

It’s notifying you to finish setting up Apple Pay cash...

I don’t think that’s it because I already have Apple Pay Cash set up. I double checked in the Wallet app and it shows that the Apple Pay Cash card is ready for Apple Pay.

Try opening the app tray in iMessage and clicking on the Apple Pay icon to see what happens

Have you had any iMessages that failed when being sent? If not, I’d try to sign out of iMessage then sign back in to see if that clears up the issue.

No messages have failed to send as far as I know. It’s odd because the exclamation point is only there for three or four seconds after unlocking the phone after a reboot. I turned iMessage off and rebooted the phone and there was no exclamation point. I turned iMessage back on, rebooted the phone, and the exclamation point came back as it had before.

Also, I signed out of my iCloud account for iMessage purposes, signed back into my iCloud account, rebooted the phone, and the exclamation point came back for a few seconds upon unlocking the phone.

Anyway, thanks for your input. I’m not losing any sleep over this since the exclamation point is only visible for a few seconds after rebooting the phone and then it goes away. I was just curious if anybody else was seeing similar behavior, but it doesn’t sound like they are based on the lack of other replies to this thread.

This has been happening to me for the past 6 weeks. Not related to Apple Pay Cash or anything else that other replies have indicated. I believe it’s just a delay in iMessage activating/connecting after you reboot.

I’ve seen similar behaviour on my X following a reboot, with the red exclamation mark appearing briefly. I’ve assumed it’s a connection issue too, that disappears once the phone has reconnected to wi-fi.

Is there a fix for people who don’t want to set up Apple Pay or can’t? Phone constantly has badge on settings icon and is always giving me pop-ups to “finish setting up my phone, finish setting up Apple Pay”. It’s SO annoying, I’m at my wits end. I don’t have a card that works with Apple Pay so I have no clue how to stop these constant, harassing, notifications.

Go through the setup options for it and choose not to set it up and that should be it.

Do you have your cellular data turned off? I go to Control Center and turn mine off to save battery when I’m using WiFi, and when I have it turned on, the red circle with an exclamation point doesn’t appear when I boot up. Try that...?
