So long story short those kind of notifications are great in that they have no associated costs as it's done completely on device, but there's a lot of downsides as well. I plan to offer both in Apollo but I wanted to offer "true" push notifications at first, but there's a small fee to cover associated monthly server costs that are required for it to work. And it's not really $25, it's $1/mo but if you want to unlock it for a lifetime it's $25, because you're basically paying for a ton of months of ongoing service up front. It's kinda like how Netflix isn't $6000, it's $10/mo they just don't have a lifetime option that would cost $6000 if they did. :p

Thanks for taking the time to respond.

From my perspective, the cost is too high, but I'm not aiming to dictate pricing for you or the app in anyway.

I’m begging - someone PLEASE explain to me why this app is so praised. I’ve tried it and I just don’t get it. I get all reddit features for free on the official app and I think the design is better and makes more sense. Why would I pay for an app that I can’t see having any benefits over any other app? I’ve posted this on numerous reddit threads and no one can ever explain to me why they like it over any other reddit app.
It's a preference thing, if you don't like it no one will be able to make you

You wouldn't. You don't in any other aspect of your life, why would you in this? Why is that so hard to understand?

I understand that. But I’m not seeing what everyone else is seeing in the app. I just wish at least one person that uses it would explain why they like it so much.

Personally I think the app is a great native experience, it’s simple and well made, which is why it’s popular. The Official Reddit app may be nice, but the connection that the Apollo Dev has with the community makes a big difference too. To me, it’s like buying from a small family business versus Walmart. Sure, I could get it cheaper at Walmart, but I could also pay a little more and get a well made product from the small business down the road, and sometimes that’s just what I’m looking for.

I would pay a pretty penny for a nice, dual paned Reddit app for iPad. I have a feeling Apollo will be the first app to do it well (I don't like Narwhal's implementation at all -- the best so far was Alien Blue, but it is no longer usable for me). Until then, I am sticking to the Reddit app + mobile website for my Reddit experience.

To be clear you rest your finger on the screen and don't want anything to happen? Hope that doesn't sound sarcastic legitimately just want to make sure I understand. I can look into disabling the long-press options as an option but I honestly haven't heard this issue prior to this.

I am a HAPPY pro and Lifetime user! I find your app to be visually stunning and I love developers that CARE!

Bingo. I’ll never understand the hype. When I first joined Reddit I tried it out and switched back to the official one. Tried it again after all the praise a month later.

For me, the official one is better and cleaner and supported notifications.

Me too. Especially one with iPad Smart Keyboard support @ChristianSelig.

I used to use amrc(now called Antenna) but changed to Apollo after Antenna kept crashing. Love the app @ChristianSelig. Your transparency and constant communication really goes a long way with me.
Agreed! I'm blown away by the quality, and Christian's responsiveness. I have no problem paying for a service that I find valuable, and Apollo delivers this with a well thought out interface to Reddit. Good interfaces, UI, and experience are things I find valuable. It is why I have an iPhone in the first place.

So now we can agree this is the best Reddit client? I haven't tried it yet, only the official app.

The push notification are still a paid upgrade? Is it possible to pay only once for the notifications?

Nope. It is still trying to catch up feature-wise with apples like Narwhal and Readder.

That’s what many of the early adopters including myself thought. It was a bait and switch. I deleted the app.

Absolutely agree. I paid for the pro version as well and then they pulled this stunt. No thank you. I don’t understand why so many people defend this action.

Really? "Bait and Switch", huh? What features were advertised as being part of your Pro purchase that you do not have access to?

Really? What in your pro purchase do you not have anymore? There's no stunt here and Christen has explained in detail as to why this is. All you get out of the subscription that you didn't get before is push notifications, and with that comes alot of server costs that a small developer CANNOT swallow. He's has already said that less accurate free fetch notifications are coming if you bothered to do and research whatsoever before you opened your mouth

I used Apollo for 9 hours and 29 minutes last week.

Paying $3 for features in the app and getting that amount of usage is a no-brainer to me, I did that last year. I went a step further and paid $20 for Ultra.

The idea of it being a bait-and-switch, considering how much money people here spend on fast moving consumer goods like coffee, gas and toilet paper every day, that's comical.

I agree but it is actually $25.

Not that it matters.

Native design, no ads, not as bloated as the official App. On top of that the developer is awesome, listens to what the users want and updates it accordingly.

Think of any possible annoyance that you wished that the official Reddit app would fix, correct, or give a better solution for, Christian has done that. Personally, it's such an intuitive app to me that I cannot go back to the standard reddit app. I'm so used to all the little conveniences over the past year or so that I can't even remember what the stock app lacks anymore. Maybe you just prefer a simple "instagram-style" reddit app, therefore the standard app works just fine for you.

It's crazy how people can justify spending $2-$5 on a coffee every day, but not spending a few dollars supporting the developer of their favorite app.
