It really started to die in 2022-2023, but the final nails are definitely being put in this year.

So many "open systems" now completely hidden if you don't have an account now. How long until Reddit doesn't even let you read without an account?

Of note - I killed my Reddit account during the whole Apollo API thing a few years ago. I even did the "gibberish your existing content" then "delete your old content", finally deleting my account. I did this in the week before the TOS changed.

I went back the next week - all my old content had been restored, just without my user name. Of course, without an active account, I couldn't open a support ticket demanding they delete my content. 😡
So many countries are passing laws requiring some kind of ID check “because child porn” and/or privacy stuff, bot are a massive PITA for small companies and it will likely kill the WWW. Apps are likely going to become the norm IMO.

I think maybe you misunderstand the distinction between "apps" and "web". The simple truth of the matter is, the difference is negligible. The "world wide web" isn't going anywhere; an app just becomes the new front door to a given house (aka website). And that front door gives the "lord" of the house greater control over who gets in and what they can do once inside (such as whether or not they can readily block ads).

In other words, your assertion that apps are rapidly becoming the new norm is a reasonable assessment... but that has nothing at all to do with the ID check laws you mentioned; those laws apply equally to both web and apps. Or at least... they will, in time.

So why not stop now and send a message?
I don't really "use" it from Reddit point of view, I don't have an account. I simply browse the posts. If they prevent me doing that via a web browser, I will stop. I will never sign up for an account. For now it seems you can bypass the prompt to use the app. I will carry on in the browser until that is no longer possible.

And so many "apps" are just wrappers for their website.
