After their lack of appearance at Apple's September event, updated third-generation AirPods can be expected to be unveiled during next week's "Unleashed" Mac-focused event, according to a leaker.

Rumors had initially indicated that the new AirPods would ship alongside the iPhone 13 and Apple Watch Series 7 announcement last month, but the new earphones failed to materialize. AirPods are best equipped with the iPhone and Apple Watch, adding fuel to speculation their release was somewhat imminent.

Now, as Apple has confirmed its likely last event of the year for this coming Monday, October 18, all the indications suggest that new AirPods will also be announced alongside redesigned MacBook Pros. Weibo leaker @PandaIsBald, which accurately reported the launch of the baseline ninth-generation iPad for Apple's last event, has claimed that alongside "M1X" Macs, the third-generation AirPods with an updated design will also be announced.

The third-generation AirPods will be the first significant design change to the AirPods line since the AirPods Pro in 2019. The new AirPods will replace the existing second-generation AirPods in the line and feature an updated redesign that takes inspiration from the higher-end AirPods Pro, but without "Pro" features like Active Noise Cancelation.

The refreshed AirPods are expected to take design cues from the AirPods Pro and leaked schematics and images but appear to confirm those design changes. However, what remains unclear is whether the new AirPods will feature silicone ear-tips, like the AirPods Pro, or feature the same in-ear design as the first and second-generation AirPods.

Previous reports suggested that Apple's second planned event for the fall would focus on new Macs and iPads. Surprisingly, Apple announced an updated iPad mini and baseline iPad during its September event, leaving the upcoming "Unleashed" event to be wholly focused on the Mac.

The new highly anticipated 14-inch and 16-inch MacBook Pros will feature better performance, a new design, and a mini-LED display that could feature ProMotion, allowing for a 120Hz variable refresh rate. Apple is also likely to announce a date for when macOS Monterey will launch to the public.

Wouldn’t be so sure. They should be, but after last month, nothing is certain, and I kinda like it that way with events, surprise is nice.

As for me, my pros are doing just fine. In fact, this year is shaping up to be the least I’ve spent on Apple products in 13 years or so. I’ve spent a grand total of $29 on Apple gear in 2021.

Even my desire to replace my 11PM is starting to wane.

Still using the first gen!!
Not a huge music listener - I use mine more for watching online content/movies and calls.....
May upgrade to the 3rd gen.....

Sounds like the big focus is on MacBook Pro. Would love to see a new larger iMac / Pro but given zero rumours I imagine its not happening any time soon.

Is the selling point of these going to be mainly their price? Or why wouldn't one always get the Air Pods Pro instead?

You answered your own question.

He didn't really. Some people (myself included) can't stand rubber tipped earbuds - it's the reason my wife inherited my AirPod Pros (despite me loving the features) - the weird ultra-enclosed echoey, vibration-y feeling is really uncomfortable.

They will come with a body temperature sensor.
Can't see them coming with any features that aren't present in the Pros to be honest. I'm hoping for feature parity with the gen 1 Pros, minus noise cancellation. Insta-buy in that case for me.

What happened to everyone's M1X Mac Mini rumours for monday? Or have they vapourised into thin air? (and not M2 thin Air as that's rumoured for next year 😜)

I'm in the market for an M1X MBP *or* Mini, so seeing the prices at the same time would be nice. 🤔 Likely gonna be MBP though to replace like with (much faster) like. But since it seldom leaves my desk much these days simultaneous launch price comparison would be ideal for me.

We don’t know yet. The rumours suggest AP3 will not have the active noise cancellation, silicone ear tips are also questionable. There were also rumours that Apple might continue selling the current AP2, which could also affect the pricing.

I’m surprised that, it these pics are accurate, the next gen “cheap” AirPods will look so much like the AP Pro. In fact they will look identical in the ear. Missing the upsell for the fashion snobs that want to be seen with the top end tech.

Compared to the MBP, this is almost like double sales tax for my cart I guess. Better to get it all in one big bill I suppose.
