I hate the new design and am shocked they allowed this. I personally depend on OneNote for 9 hours a day of my work, and I cannot believe they did such a radical redesign without so much as the option to opt out or revert to the regular layout. I paid $70 for OneNote (back when you could buy it as a standalone, it's free now) so it's not like the program was always some free giveaway- they need to take their users and their work more seriously. I actually ended up using a backup device because it had the older version on for the last 2 days of work. Not a lot of serious users like the new design, nobody in my office does, you're left with only 1/3 of the page with those extra bars. Your work space is more important than "navigation". Just awful, if you ask me. Both the design and not giving people an option to switch back.

Looks way better and easier to use but before I really make the switch from Evernote they need to make their freaking web clipper usable.

Trust me, it's not- it looks cool in the photo above, but on your screen, that extra "navigation" takes up WAY too much screen. 12 people in our office use OneNote everyday, only one person is using the new version, the rest are using either devices with the old version or switched to Evernote. I'm watching overviews on Youtube of using Evernote right now because of this BS. The very least they could have done was let people download the old version or revert back to it.

Not a huge OneNote user on the Mac platform but I'll give it a spin. I'm dreading going back to my offices tomorrow and have to retrain 50 people on the new interface - the update may be "free" but it'll cost me a few thousand bucks to train my employees soon. Grr.

The main bit I picked up from the short video was the hit-up for Wilson’s Barbecue in Albertville. My BBQ blood count is running low as there isn't a decent 'cue place within 1500 miles of Seattle/Portland (anyone disputing this needs to hit up Franklin's or Black's in Austin or Joe's in KC or Central or Cozy Corner in Memphis for a humbling smackdown). I could get some chicken with white sauce while I'm in Alabama too. Hungry now, time to fire up the grill… :p

What about local network onenotes?

It's available on windows but not Mac.

Cloud-based notes are worthless in a corporate environment. I cannot collaborate with my colleagues being the only one on the team with a mac.

If the Mac is joined to the ADUC domain and you're authenticated in Kerberos there should be no issues. The local network you're envisioning is USB or over WiFi; not exactly a collaboration but which others provide what you're after?

Store you OneNote on SharePoint Online or OneDrive. Makes collaboration easy peasy.

I've always wanted to try this but I'm addicted to Evernote

I switched to OneNote from Evernote the day that Evernote stopped giving multiple-device access for free (not complaining - Evernote have every justification to charge for their product, but I wasn't going to pay for it).

OneNote has been great and keeps my life in order. It even imported all my old notes out of Evernote.

Good idea, but the implementation is a little off. It just crowds out workspace. The menus on the left should open/close based on mouse-over, or be able to be pinned open if needed. To have them just sitting there, always open...not ideal.

Microsoft does more for apple users than Apple does. MS is developing more and more Pro Apps for macOS and iOS Pro equipment.

Are there any things you miss?

I have the premium subscription to Evernote as I need offline access and bigger upload limits. I use it for my business and it's been robust.

Tried it out, it's still slow with syncing and PDFs that are imported are really blurry, it doesn't allow for vector zooming (not sure what the technical term for that is) so when you zoom to full page, text appears blurry.

I've been using Notability, while it doesn't have as many levels of folders, it's the best writing app I've found, been using it for 3 years now while studying and they update with new features all the time. If you want a note taking app, give it a go!

Guys Ive grown to be ok with it... You can actually hide all navigation panes which help a lot. You actually get more space freed up in you notebooks when you do this... It does take an extra click to get somwhere... So its still a MS way of 'improving things' , but its not the worst.

Agree, I use it extensively as well. I'm willing to give the new layout a chance but I have a) grown accustomed to the current layout as I've been using OneNote since 2010, and b) feel the navigation panes on left can get unwieldy and take up too much screen real estate, even if collapsible. I'm also curious whether how content displays on a page has changed.

I am contemplating an upgrade to the newer ON version but only if video recording is now an option. (Audio but not video is possible in the older mac version.) Would one of you kindly let me know? It's a drag to get a new version only to discover that it does not contain that one feature you so wanted! :) Thanks, MacRumour Community!
