    my guess is that it will be the name of there hardware unlock for the 3G.

    Musclenerd had some posts on his twitter about getting hold of the bootrom of the sgold3. Followed by a post saying they have a bunch of new code to play with.

    Why... do we need a hardware unlock when we already have a software unlock?

    Why wouldn't this be the 2G iPod touch software unlock?

    I HIGHLY doubt this has anything to do with the iPod touch 2G jailbreak. Everyone just wants to think that. I believe that this has to do with a "permanent unlock" that the dev team was talking about on their blog, rather than a daemon launched at bootup (which is what yellowsn0w is).

    I think what he meant was "permanent" not hardware. A hardware unlock is clearly a step backwards.

    What would be the advantage to a so called "permenant" unlock?

    yep, meaning it will still be unlocked even if the device isn't jailbroken. As long as sequential updates don't update the baseband your unlock will stay.

    Oh, so a software-based unlock that changes hardware (configuration), allowing the phone to remain unlocked through updates?

    Or something involving a crowbar and a soldering iron? :p

    You completely lost me with that post... :eek: anyways if they do manage to get complete control of the baseband (like they do with the 2G iphone with bootneuter) then unless a software update replaces the baseband with a newer version then the modified version will stay intact, thus keeping the phone unlocked even through a restore in iTunes (not a DFU).

    Not exactly true. The reason why Boot Neuter continues to work on 2G iPhone without further hack is because Apple has stopped updating baseband on 2G altogether. It is not because Dev Team has developed a fool proof hack to 2G baseband.

    You just restated what I said. The only reason that bootneuter keeps working is because the baseband ISN'T being updated anymore. If something similar to bootneuter was released for the 3G it would remain permanent until the next baseband update, then it would need to be re-unlocked.

    not really, the 16GB is about 700$ in Europe, no contract or anything, two year warranty.
    In the US you have to kinda sign a contract and then end it, right? Doesn't it come to cost you about 500$ on the whole? An 8GB, that is. A 16GB would cost about 600?
    Anyway, does anyone know how warranties operate? Would a factory unlocked iPhone have a warranty in the US? Since it can also be used as an iPod?

    Yes, I men permanent unlock. From what I understand (which probably is wrong)...

    yellowsn0w injects code into the running baseband that bypasses the sim-check.

    What they want to do is modify the sgold bootrom (the chip that does the actually checking (sgold chip/bootrom is the only difference between factory unlocked and locked phones IIRC). So once you flash/update/patch/pee on/whatever so the sgold doesn't check or always says it valid or whatnot we're on the save side.

    redsn0w=iPod Touch 2G Jailbreak

    Thats it ppl!!!!

    We've been waiting for so long now.
    Some days ago appeared a strange domain named redsn0w.com registered by iPhone-Dev Team.
    Well some sources says that its the iPod Touch 2G jailbreak. Lets see.

    iPhone-Dev Team:
    * Well it isn’t a British Thermonuclear Device.
    * It isn’t an episode from “The Twilight Zone”
    * And it certainly isn’t iPhone 3G related (right now)
    * There is one other device…
    * It fits in your pocket..
    * What can it be?

    Chronic Dev Team (Currently working on a jailbreak for Touch 2G) posted on their blog that redsn0w will be the first iPod Touch 2G Jailbreak.

    MuscleNerd Said that they found a exploit for other device that is not iPhone 3G. After, in one of his comments he points out that its iPod Touch 2G related.

    This thread made me very happy :)

    I heard about redsn0w a week or so ago, but was skeptical about what it was for. This is very good...

    Great. I've been wanting to jailbreak for a long time now. I can't wait to be able to hide the "Stocks" app.

    So, how does jailbreak work?

    Is it simple as using the Pwnage tool?

    Because I want to tinker around with the iPhone OS on the iPod touch, so I can put in Nike+ app on my iPhone. (and also at the same time, simplify my iPhone app development by borrowing some iPhone OS code)

    But seriously, when will it come out? I want to start using the beta ASAP!
