I have an Acer R221Q as a 2nd monitor to my MacBook Pro, and my desk is in a relatively dim room, so the display's lowest brightness setting is still too bright for my liking. Is there an app to further reduce the brightness of my external monitor?

Brightness Control looks like it hasn't been updated since 2006, but Shades is a little more recent (2013). Thanks for the suggestion, though.

There's also something out there called "Shades".

Using it now, works well.
Using Shades now. It does exactly what I wanted. Thanks!

I wish I could control the brightness from the menu bar icon. I'm hiding the brightness slider, and it seems like the only way to adjust the brightness is going into the Shades preferences through System Preferences and showing the slider, adjusting then brightness, then hiding the slider again.

But I do like how it remembers my settings for my monitor and automatically turns on when I connect it.

Does the menu bar icon do anything for you?

I believe you can (I do on El Capitan).
The choice is "in there someplace"…

Strange. The icon doesn't do a single thing in Sierra. I'll send a bug report.

I figured out Shades' menu bar control. I control my external monitor's brightness from the menu bar on my MBP's screen. I'm liking this app a lot now.
