Reduce file size of iphone photo cache?

So when you put photos on you're iphone apple has it where itunes creates a cache on your computer (and on the iphone) where it drastically increases the size the photos take up. Is there any way to combat this? I put like just under 60mb but apple in all their infinite wisdom has itunes turn that to just under 500mb. Is there any way of keeping the iphone/itunes from doing this or am I pretty much stuck?
