I see that Chrome and Opera have developed data compression options for smartphone users who are worried about exceeding their monthly data plans. I'm wondering if there are similar options for desktop browsers? I would like to be able to travel with a Verizon mobile hot spot and use less of my allotted data when browsing with my laptop....

Yup. Opera at least offers data compression on their desktop browsers, and there are probably plugins and addons for Chrome, Firefox, and the like that perform a similar function. Installing ad blockers would help you out a bit, as well.

Beyond that, the best thing you can do is take the usual common sense precautions, which I'm sure you're already doing. Turn off your cloud services, don't stream music, etc. etc.
