I have an iPod that was formatted as a Mac. Recently I wanted a friend to transfer some files to my iPod (with disk usage), but my friend has a Windows machine and so my iPod couldn't be used on it. We re-formatted the iPod to Windows, figuring I could just get the files, transfer them to my computer, and then re-sync my library later. I moved all the files I needed from the iPod to my computer (Mac), but now my Mac doesn't recognize the iPod. It shows it as any regular disk, but I can only read the files on it. Trying to move them to trash gives me error code -61, since apparently Macs cannot remove data from NTFS-formatted drives.

I've reset my iPod, but now every time I disconnect it from my computer it resets again. On the iPod, the storage says that I've used 0kb and I have 0kb left to use (the iPod has 160gb of storage).

And while the computer seems not to recognize it's an iPod, iTunes does launch when it is connected. However, the iPod is not listed on the iPod, so I cannot restore it. I've read several Apple support articles, but I cannot seem to fix the issue.

Can anyone point me in the right direction with this?

I don't think I can reformat it in Disk Utility. I'm attaching a picture of what I see: the reformat options are not available.

What if you select 148.9 GB Apple iPod Media instead of what you selected?

Same thing, except now I have access to the "Partition" tab (all options grayed out in there as well).

Then go to the Partition tab and select 1 Partition under Volume Scheme (arrow number 3).

    Wow, that is really strange.

Can you get to a Windows PC and use Control Panel > Administrative Tools > Computer Management > Disk Management (?) to format the iPod with the FAT32 file system instead of the NT file system (NTFS)?

Also have a look here for future endeavours into formatting.

Restoring the iPod on a Windows machine managed to do the trick. Thanks for the advice! :)
