If I reformat my main OSX leopard harddrive and reinstall, what will become of my Time Machine backup? Can it restore my files after a fresh reinstall of leopard or is it now useless?

I used migration assistant when doing a clean install. The next backup is going to be a complete backup again since the system files have new timestamps.

You can use Migration Assistant to restore a Mac from a Time Machine backup.
