iPod reformatting songs to go ipod?

So i get my songs off limewire and some dont show up on my ipod. How do i reformat the songs into mp4 or whatever so they can get onto my ipod?

iPods can play mp3 files, btw.

itunes is too expensive and music should be free. sometimes the songs are other than ps3 or mp4
