Rumors had it that Apple was going to refresh it however they said nothing about it at the keynote. What do you think, is there gonna be a refresh soon?

So hard to say. The October launch has gone very quiet with no rumours right now but that's probably as it's iPhone 11 Pro testing week for the press.
It's possible that Apple will do a quite update - A12 and HDMI 2.1 being a very welcome addition OR they'll wait until next year and add AV1 decoding along with HDMI 2.1 and possibly a 120fps UI and gaming mode.

I notice that the Belkin Apple TV 4K HDMI lead now says '8K' in its description...

Ugh, where is it?

It's not like it probably NEEDS to be better, but the reality is Apple will dump support for a given CPU 5-6 years after it's first used. That means it probably only has 2-3 years left. Not good for a "new" $180 device.

I need one both for Disney+ and throwing my Tivo into another room.

The Belkin cable always said that it's HDMI 2.1. Changing the branding to 8K is just marketing since there now are 8K TVs out there people think they will need new cables.

As for AV1 decoding that seems possible with current HW also. Infuse 6.1.6 introduced AV1 decoding support:

I am also hoping for a HDMI 2.1 ATV soon with higher refreshrates on the UI. But I am not very positiv on it happening this year. And I can't understand why they would go for the A12 and not the A12X if it was true.

The time that it was last used is likely more important, and with the new iPad still using an A10, the current Apple TV should still work for many years.

I’d love refreshed and more powerful Apple TV hardware, especially with Apple Arcade’s imminent tvOS launch. Apple TV 4K is currently one of Apple’s oldest products, having been on sale for 739 days, and 150 days beyond its average product cycle time. The Siri Remote could also use a serious design re-think. With Apple Arcade, tvOS 13’s PS4 and XBox controller support and the launch of Apple TV+, now would seem to be the right time for a full refresh.

I fully agree, but with the "new" entry-level iPad again using the A10 there doesn't seem to be much hope for the Apple TV and its A10X to receive an upgrade.

It should be, but isn't.

To date, most go 5 years, with a very few getting 6. Nothing past that, and much less than 5 on older hardware.

People still use the original Apple TV, so what are you talking about, you are making no sense

Actually you’re making no sense. did you think I meant the hardware exploded after it was no longer supported?

no, I meant what I said. It’s no longer safe to use. That’s less the case for an AppleTV that’s more going out just to walled gardens than it is with a general computing device like an iPhone, but still, it’s not good.

I think you're probably right. I'm still using an ATV 3 for one of our TVs. I was stunned when it actually got a TVOS update a few months ago (to support Apple's TV+ subscription service - but still, I was amazed because it had been years since that 3 got an update of any kind).

I get the impression that it's going to have a 'quiet update' on 1st November to tie in with the tv service.
It really does not look as though an event is coming this year.

I hope you’re right!

Ugh, I’m also waiting on Tivo to hurry up and release AppleTV/Roku/Firetv programs, like they announced in JANUARY and were supposedly releasing q3.

and My Disney+ subscription starts soon.
man, everyone hurry up and release things 😂

Haha well... there are AirPod Pro's on their way and a new MacBook Pro soon so... :)
The Verge has commented that some Arcade games are showing the A10X weakness and that a new model should be on its way. Very interesting, they felt that tvOS13 was implemented on a new model that's still in the works...
A new OLED TV with HDMI 2.1 and a new Apple TV with HDMI 2.1 could be a very very nice experience!

Enjoy what you have right now and look forward to the future. It's a bit like Christmas, it'll be worth waiting for :) :) :) Apple never let people down with their launches PLUS they don't rush things to market, so the updated Apple TV will be worth it. Remember when ATV HD was launched in 2015 and everyone was sad because they had not given it 4K? (Remember the Amazon Fire TV was 4K - I bet most of those boxes are in the bin/skip by now). Well, it was worth waiting back then, HEVC hadn't been implemented, HDR was a mess etc etc, 4K streaming would not have been a perfect experience then - now skip 2 years and ATV 4K launched with all of the magic - HEVC streaming, 4K iTunes store, films upgraded with agreement deals by Hollywood, HDR and Dolby Vision and just 4 weeks later - automatic frame rate adjustment. Pretty spectacular way back in 2017 :) and a damn fine media box that did everything pretty flawlessly!

I hope that is true. It seemed REALLY odd to me that they would launch a gaming platform without updating. I thought for sure they would do it then.

Yes very bizarre especially when guys on here along with The Verge have commented that some games from Arcade don't run well on the ATV 4K.

Amazing though isn't it how the A10X chip just one year ago was considered an incredible design and yet, one year on, it's slightly ageing!

This shows why the Apple TV will always exist compared to Smart TV platforms - every two years when the new ATV gets released, you simply upgrade and then put the older box in another room, give it to a family member or friend, sell it, give it to a charity shop for someone else to enjoy or recycle it!

Damn, looks like the chances for a new Apple TV this fall are getting slimmer. I was so ready to upgrade from my ATV3, and to be honest I fully expected an Update for the launch of Apple Arcade and Apple TV+. Even a bundle with a controller and a year of Arcade or something would have been a nice touch, but seems like Apple doesn't care.

They definitely care about the Apple TV - chances are that something is holding up the process and they want to get it 100% right! It's just possible that they are waiting for AV1 hardware? Don't forget YouTube will be using this for its 4K along with Netflix. Plus of course HDMI 2.1 is needed for the next gen Apple TV with maybe 120 fps for gaming and the UI. Also WiFi6.

It's just possible that one of these necessities is holding the process up. If Apple were to release an update now without say AV1 compatibility or the HDMI 2.1 or the upgraded WiFi, by this time next year, it would be out of date and of course many, many people would take to these forums to complain.
Apple never rush a product, so I guess sit tight OR invest in the ATV 4K now and maybe sell it when a new one arrives. The amazing thing about Apple TV is that they do hold their used prices very well!

Plus maybe next year, they'll fit the A13X chip to it as they realise the importance for gaming!!!

AV1 Is a good point. I still think Apple is going to want to come out with hardware that’s at least somewhat competitive with current/future consoles. The current Apple TV 4K is so good for about every other application. I just hope with the upgrades comes a better more integrated Siri experience.

I agree with regards to Siri and yes, i'm very very surprised that Apple have allowed the currently on sale ATV 4K to struggle with some Arcade games. However, I'm sure that the future of Apple TV is very very exciting and... even more so in 2 years time when the people on their Smart TVs who are using the built in Apple TV app find that their Smart TV platform software is ridden with bugs, crashes or lack of updates or even worst, that hackers have gotten into the crappy Samsung, Amazon or Roku platforms and stolen their Apple ID whilst wiping and locking their Macs, iPads and iPhones!!!
