Update:

I have to say, i’m am supremely frustrated with Apple Support on this issue and I know there are many more important issues going on the in the world.

It’s been 8 days since i submitted the issue and proof of purchase to Apple. When I originally submitted it, the rep said it would take 3-4 business days and it’s been 5. Every time I call, they say “the activation team is working on it and it takes 3-4 business days.” In their internal system, it says ticket last updated Sunday 5/31 and it’s now Thursday 6/4.

Concurrently, I asked to return it and they said set that up incorrectly too as a return and replace instead of return and refund like I asked for. That too can’t be automatically reversed. I called to check in with post sales, was placed on hold for and hour and then I gave up.

So, I have a $3200 MBP that can not be used nor returned until someone from Apple can actually solve a problem!

If you can't visit an Apple store in person (some stores are open, depending on COVID status), I'd escalate this to Apple Customer Relations by calling (800) 692-7753 and pressing 0 repeatedly until you reach a live person.

If all fails, email Tim Cook and he'll pass it along to someone in the executive Customer Relations team, and they should get back to you quickly.

I called today, 8th day in a row, and finally got someone to fix the return issue and it's already with Fedex. Apparently they had actually fixed the return issue the other day but never emailed me about it nor had a supervisor called, both of which were promised. The senior support person was apologetic and I was always polite and thanked them for Tim Cook's statement on the apple.com homepage. I wonder if / when I'll ever hear from the mysterious unlock department?
