Great! Those two nuggets answered a question that I asked and one that I was about to ask.

seemed to have set the NAS up but one problem i have is my external WDblack drive that i download to asks for password every time then fails to download due to permissions ?. how can i just download straight to it please.
i am the only one in the house that uses the computer yet it ask for passwords in finder also . now that i have set up wd my could as timeshare it won't let me delete the timeshare folder on my other external drive i don't have permissions ? i knew how to do it in win7 but lost on osx ?.

Have you tried repairing disk permissions yet? If you have not, I suggest that you do so.

I have one more question about your NAS. You can read files that are located on the NAS. Can you also write to your NAS?

NAS is ok can read write stream from it . The WDblack external for music pics films ect is the problem seems i dont have permissions and under info the option of repair permissions says no next to it . Ive done somthong wrong either at formatting it or my acount is only guest ? But im the only one who use's it csn you log in as an administrator?. Or should i start all over again if so how you do that please.

Im trying to delete a timemachine folder on the WDblack drive i dont need it as i now have it set up on my NAS but everytime it fails at the end saying i dont have permission yet the drive says im the owner and can read and write to it ?.

in the end i opted to reformat the WDblack drive.been using transmission i like that and handbrake as most of my files are wmv and mkv there are no preview thumbnail pics . anyway hanbrake is it best to encode in normal or highest ?
also applecare should i buy that at some stage is it worth it i believe i have 12 months to buy it .

I'd hold off on the AppleCare.
Minis have proven to be quite reliable.
If about ten months goes by, and you've had zero problems with it, I'd pass on the AppleCare.

Regarding permissions problems with external drives:
This may help, or maybe not, but it's worth a try.

Connect the drive that's giving you permissions problems, so it's icon appears on the desktop.
Now, click on the drive icon ONE TIME to select it.
Type "command-i" to bring up the "get info" box.
In the very-bottom-right-hand-corner, there is a lock icon.
Click the lock and enter your administrative password.
Now, to the left (on the bottom) there may be a checkbox saying "ignore ownership on this volume".
Put a checkmark in it and dismiss the get info box.
Does this make things any better?

More thoughts:
You may want to keep the PC up and running for a few months, as you become more accustomed to "the Mac way" of doing things.
Having both computers gives you the opportunity to go back to Windows if the Mac is giving you frustration at getting a particular task done.

Also:
Coming from the PC world you might be inclined to think that Apple makes good keyboards and pointing devices as well, but my opinion (and mine only) is that they don't. Third-party keyboards and mice are my choice with the Mac, and have been so for many years....

the pc drive has already been taken out and formatted with the mac mini it is now in a external caddy the other drive tried loads of stuff took ownership of it etc actually gave a quick insight into the system tbh a good learning curve I'm loving the mac mini and osx haven't upgraded to Yosemite yet

right i had to set read write permissions on the folders on the external drive so that seems ok before i did that i went into system drive and enabled read and write also ? right or wrong thing to do . its stopped the pop up password to move or delete folders now and asking for authentification as well.
