The title says it all. While I was in the Apple store to buy my older daughter a MacBook for college, I ordered a 30GB iPod for her sister. I was planning to get a refurbed unit. But Apple won't provide monogramming--free or at any price--on a refurb. So we spent $10 more and got it new.

I would imagine this is because the laser engraving happens along the production line, and the refurbished iPods are already manufactured and ready to go.

If the new one was only $10 more than the refurbished one, I would rather have the new one anyway.

    When is laser engraving done?

Well, I tried to cancel 12 hours after placing the order, and they told me it was too late--the iPod was already on the loading dock or on its way to the loading dock. So they must have meant the Chinese loading dock.

I wanted to cancel because the iPod was replacing one that my daughter had lost. 12 hours after we placed our order, she found it! It wasn't her fault; as she had insisted all along must have happened, another family member had moved it under a pile of papers in a bin.

So now we're stuck with a spare iPod. The new one is engraved, so I can't sell it without taking a big loss. The old one had been in the house all of 8 or 9 days before it got mislaid. I'll probably just hold on to it as a spare until Daughter 1 or Daughter 2 loses or breaks her iPod or Nano.

    I agree--even without the engraving.

so what happens to the ipods that are engraved but end up refurb'd?
it would be pretty funny/odd to get one of those when ordering a refurb.

you will never get an engraved one through refurb...

Apple does not take any iPods that are engraved back... even within the initial 14 day return period....

^you cannot RETURN an engraved iPod or exchange for a non engraved one, but you can turn it in for warranty service, which is a big source of refurbed iPods. Refurbs get new housings as part of the process, since they get new serial numbers, so the engraved housing is replaced.

you can go to any jewler and get it engraved for less than 15 bucks.

and, yes, depending on what you put on it, you will ruin resale value.

some dude name John from NY wont want to buy an iPod with Susan across the back of it im guessing.

Unless the price is good enough, thus ruining the resale value. Well said.
