After scratching and damaging my S6 watch I’m looking at getting the U1 from the Apple refurb store for £569.00

Would it be better to get this watch as it looks more durable than the new S10 for £429?

I need something that will be durable for every day use.

It’s more durable but also a lot thicker. Feature wise, they’re similar. You won’t get sleep apnea detection on the U1, but you get a longer battery life.

I’ve had an Ultra (1) for nearly two years now. I put a screen protector on it within the first week, so I can’t say much about the glass durability. The body is in perfect shape.

As I have smaller wrists, I probably should have gotten a smaller Apple Watch - it looks a little ridiculous on me.

The sapphire crystal on the U1 is going to be much more durable than the glass on the £429 S10. I’ve worn sapphire crystal Apple Watches without screen protectors for years and have had 0 scratches or micro scratches. A sacrificial screen protector on the S10 that you replace 1-2 times will year work well too imo. You’ll see scratches though.

If durability is your main concern, go with the Ultra. However if you’re after features, I think the S10 edges it. It’s not clear cut though, so choose the set of features you prefer. The Ultra 2 is often available refurbished for £100 more, and is much closer to feature parity - it probably only missed out on the newer screen tech (although can get brighter) and faster charging.

Pros of S10
- Better screen (bigger & better off-axis viewing)
- Sleep apnoea detection
- Double tap gesture
- On-device Siri
- New ultra wideband chip for precision finding with iPhone 15 and above
- Newer chip (S10 - which seems to be a rebadged S9 - compared to S8 in the Ultra, which was essentially a rebadged S6)
- Faster charging
- Media playback through built-in speakers

Pros of Ultra
- More rugged design with sapphire crystal display
- Siren
- Better water resistance (depth gauge to 40m)
- Dual frequency (more accurate) GPS
- Double the battery life

Would I be better off with a series 9 stainless steal for £549? Or should I get the Series 10 aluminum for £429 with latest features and get a case?

I would go with the S10 or U2 at minimum. The S9 Processor is a significant bump from the previous ones and we can already see features being filtered out for the S8; Sleep Apnea, Advanced Cycle Tracking, double tap guesture, on device siri.

The series 9 is not much difference internally to the 10. I believe they both have the same features software wise.
You will just miss out on the new design.

If you like the Ultra's design, and are good with the size - I would go Ultra. I've still got an Ultra 1, you'll get the larger display size, titanium case, sapphire display, action button, more watchfaces (Maybe..unless the S10 gets Ultra faces) and most importantly, more battery life.

The S10 definitely won't match the durability of the ultra if you are rough on the watch (Unless you go titanium - but even still, it could be a scratch fest on the polished case design.)
