I bought an Airport Extreme base station on Monday for $190. I now see that Apples refurb store has a 2TB Time capsule on sale for $179

I went ahead and ordered the Time Capsule, with plans to return the base station to Best Buy when it returns.

But the more I think about it, the more nervous I get about the quality of the refurbished Time Capsule. I know Apple puts it's refurbs through all the paces (I actually own a refurbished imac with no comlaints), but given the 40% price drop on this, I have to wonder if there is something else wrong with it.

Has anyone used a refurbished Time Capsule? Do you think I should be concerned?

Update: My TC came in, and it looks brand new. I got it setup, ran a backup, and it seems to be working perfectly.

Ive owned one of the refurbished Time Capsules for about a year now and haven't had a single issue with it. I highly recommend the refurbished ones. The steps that Apple takes to make sure that the refurbished ones won't fail is great. Ive heard the often times the refurbished models are simply returns that they can't sell as new.

In March, 2015 I bought a Refurbished TC from the Apple On-line Store and I am one-happy Apple Customer with this purchase because it is also covered by my Apple Care on my Refurbished Mac Mini(Late 2014) that I purchased Last June.

Back in the Year 2013 I also purchased a Refurbished Apple Express from the Apple On-line Store and it was also one great purchase.

I bought a refurb 3 TB Time Capsule in November 2015 for (I think) $179. It has been great and I think it was a fantastic deal. I've also bought two refurb Airport Express units at $65 (one was purchased in Nov 2013, not sure when the other one was). Neither the TC or the AEs have had any problems whatsoever.

I highly recommend getting these refurb Airports. Remember, they all have the standard 1-year Apple warranty, just like non-refurb units (and you can purchase the Apple Care extension, but IMHO it it not worth it).

I wanted more than 2 TB in my TC, so I've replaced the stock HDD with a 5 TB Toshiba drive and it's been smooth sailing. One has to be careful doing the swap but it isn't too difficult. But anyway, I've had the refurb TC all apart and saw nothing unusual inside. I'm using the 2 TB stock drive in an external enclosure on my Mac Mini and it hasn't had any problems either.

I say go for it! I like having our portable Macs automatically back up wirelessly, and I like that the TC is less clutter than an external drive/Airport Extreme combination.

Thanks for your opinions. Feeling better now. I was shocked at how much of a discount they were giving.

Is there anything the Time Capsule is lacking vs. the Airport Extreme, or is just the addition of the drive? I need another Extreme and see the Time Capsule refurb is cheaper... so great deal.

.

The Applecare on my Refurbished MM(Late 2014) which i purchased from the Apple On-Line Store last June also covers my Refurbished Apple TC that I purchased in March 2015.

I saw the refurb Extreme tower for $129 and thought about getting one to replace my flat N Extreme.

1. Is the AC really worth it?

2. Is the range better? My N doesn't work great for streaming video on my front porch.

3. Is it worth it to wait till June? I think these were last updated in June 2013.

AC is worth it if you have AC devices. Its also slightly better with N devices as well
The range is better in some situations but not all again this is dependent on what kind of devices you are using with the Airport.
If you need a new one now then get it but I would wait until June if I could. There hasn't been any major updates to the standard since 2013. The only thing that I can think that Apple could ad is MU-MIMO, and maybe some larger drives for the Time Capsule.

I picked up a refurb TC and happy with it so far. Performance is good and it looked like new.
