Except for the fact that outdated plasma 1080p still tend to have superior picture quality....... Picture quality over resolution any day.

This is the thing....

I have a 50" 4K LED Panasonic and still have an 'old' 60" Pioneer KRP-600A Plasma in another room and at times I come to the same conclusion.

Does not matter how many pixels they tell you something has, it is the quality of that resolution that can be appreciated is what really matters.

That kuro puts modern day LEDs to shame.

People get caught up in the markerting, to appreciate it, you need two sets side my side. I'll take your pioneer any day! Those blacks...

LG´s Oled is the only thing to come close, the old Kuros are still the panels to beat..
This is one of those times I hate the free market, the market wanted cheap instead of good, Pioneer killed of the TV-production and 7 years later the cheaper options still struggle to deliver anything comparable..

Just imagen where we would be if the market had gone for quality and Pioneer still made TV´s. :)

I'm not even sure why this is an article if they are $10 less (or same for 64GB) price (plus $6 shipping) for a new model...

Gary

They're discounted $20 and $30 or roughly 15%. And generally, Apple does not charge shipping. Also, Refurbished Apple products are like new condition and have the same warranty as new items. Seems like a note worthy deal to me.

Surely this is just a way of shifting new stock in Appleland. They call it used and mark it down.

Unless you plan to sit very close to you TV, it's not even much better. The tech is great, the problem is the human eye.

For someone with 20/20 vision, here is the chart for viewing distances .

You need a very big 4K tv to start noticing the difference. Getting a smaller 4K tv makes little sense .

My 65" 1080p is 3m from the couch. Even if I had perfect vision, makes no difference.

(Just took your post as it was the last to make the point, not directed at you)

Not sure where you got that graph but personally I notice 4K over 1080p almost always, unless I'm very far away.

Serious philosophical question:

Who in their right mind watches TV?

Define: TV
You mean programming broadcasted to you via terrestrial or satellite? Or you mean the device that usually sits in front of your sofa?
If you talk about the broadcasted stuff: not very often. If you talk about the device: very often.

And, until broadcasting of live events gets where it should be: I'll stay with the terrestrial alternative.

Apple refurbs are like new and I love them. I'm not saying that's not worth mentioning, but there is a better deal.

When the 32GB is discounted to $129 for refurb and $127 for new (shipped) the new one is a better deal, right?

And when the 64GB is discounted to $169 for refurb and $177 for new (shipped) I'm probably getting the new one for less than $8 more.

The noteworthy deal seems to be at Radio Shack, not Apple.

Best Buy is price matching RadioShack if you hate shipping fees. #:)
And then there is that too.

Very often on both counts for me, albeit via a Tivo.

And regarding the 4k question earlier. We don't have a 4k set and don't intend to get one any time soon. Just bought a new TV for our master bedroom and went with a non-4k set. Except for sports (and that's questionable), I don't like the look of the extra resolution on most of the 4k systems vs. non-4k for movies and such. And I'm ok with not having it on sports. I'll save the bucks and stick with what i've got. I'd guess that most consumers don't know the difference and are going to buy based on price. That said, I would think Apple would make this thing 4k.

It never fails, after checking everywhere I bought one 2 weeks ago, full price.
Of course now they are on sale:)

While I like buying from the Apple Refurb store I do shake my head (no direction) when I see their "discounts"
LOL

What if you combine 4K and HDR?

I have a third gen Apple TV from 2012 and zero complaints. This new model doesn't offer enough to make the upgrade worth it, imo.

Wow. Just wow.

Plex, alone is worth the upgrade.

Add in Siri search, voice navigation ("What did he say?", "Back up 20 seconds.", etc.) Apple Music voice control, games, and the upcoming Amazon Prime app, and I am completely blown away that anyone would make that statement.

What if you combine 4K and HDR?

The (very valid) point he is making is that the human eye cannot see the difference between 4K and 1080p at certain distances, so UHD is pretty much a waste of money for a lot of people who buy it. For instance, I bought a new TV for my girlfriend for Christmas. 43". It's a UHD television. The reason I bought it is because there's not a lot of point in buying old tech when you're making a new purchase. The TV sits about 10 feet away from those who are watching it, so the UHD functionality is pretty much useless. Now, if you get right up in front of the TV and look at UHD content it's amazing. But who wants to sit 3 feet from a 43" television?

And before anyone gets all butt hurt over the fact that they just bought a new UHD, I want to make sure my statement is clear: If you are buying a new TV anyway, there is absolutely nothing wrong with buying a UHD. But tossing your 1080p and running out to get a UHD, thinking that you're going to have a miraculously improved viewing experience is a waste for most people.

Now, OLED is a different story. But I'm not going there until someone other than LG is selling it.

waiting for 4K... maybe - because while waiting, I have migrated to the built in apps in my samsung 65" 4K for all viewing. And that's working really well - maybe I'm done with apple TV - too little, too late.

Those whining that 4K can't been seen and likely the same types that used to say 720 was good enough.
Fact of the matter is, 4K is here. I've invested in a 4K tv as I needed one a few months ago. I have no regrets - and won't tolerate a brand new apple TV to be the "weak" link in the system.

interesting - you make the argument that 1080 is good enough for the human eye - say argument we all heard about 720. But then you say you got a UHD because "not a lot of point buying old tech".... EXACTLY! apple tv is repackaged old tech where it counts.

Apple will not add 4K support simply because you can't stream 4K content in iTunes store. And Apple will not offer 4K content due to the file size.

I thought the same initially, but the new one really is so much better. Just voice search alone makes it worth it - I just pick up the remote (TV is turned on via HDMI-CEC) and say "watch ..." and it comes up with the show, giving me the option to watch it wherever it is available (HBO, Netflix, Hulu, iTunes.) That said, they still need to open up the Siri API's so that all content providers can get on there. Being able to search YouTube and Vimeo by voice would be awesome.

That plus using the siri remote for fast forward/rewind - you will never want to use a fast forward button again. You just swipe and you can position the playhead exactly where you want.

My only complaints of it were the lack of BT keyboard support and the lack of Remote app support, but both of those issues are fixed now.

Probably an influx of returns from people who bought at the Apple Store on launch day (was a Friday) and later received their online order (the following Monday or Tuesday).
An "influx" of people who bought it.. twice? why would anybody do that?

Yeah, wasn't interested, then played with the one my brother bought. The difference in experience is substantial.

I have enjoyed my ATV4. Only have to install the apps I want, no cluttered screen. Search actually works pretty well.

I do think it was a big miss to not have a TV power button on the device and instead try to be smart about it. Great, it turns the TV on when you click it, but can't ever get the TV off and no button... so still need the old remote.

And the kids love the multi player games, makes it more of a family activity over playing them on the iPad.

I'm happy with my purchase.

IMO you made the right choice in your particular personal case. The new features of the Apple TV 4 would be wasted on someone who doesn't care about them.

Exactly. It's interesting you don't find the upgrade noteworthy. Personally, I upgraded from a 3rd gen to 4th and it's like an entirely new device - I get way more use out of it thanks to the App Store - things like iPlayer and VLC, not to mention games. I love the remote and find it super helpful that it turns off my tv and adjusts the volume - I only use that one remote now.

I have a Samsung plasma and it turns on when I push a button on the Siri remote and off when I put the AppleTV to sleep.

Many charge cards have price protection so check your cards benefits.

Since I had the 22% cashback deal with a new Discover card and ApplePay until the end of 2015, I bought a 64g when they came out from an Apple Store, then when Target had discounted them briefly to $150, Discover price matched that by sending me a check for the difference. It made the 64g about $110.

Wow people broke their ATV 4s already? Or are these just repackaged returns from those upset it doesn't have 4K and Optical audio?
Seriously??? You truly think that people bought the TV thinking it had 4K, but found it didn't and returned it??? Oy vey. The things people say around here.

At the risk of merry repeating the post you quoted; people who ordered online but were given a shipping date of the Monday and instead picked one up in store on their way home on Friday or over the weekend. Then returned the slower-to-arrive online order.

It happens. People can't wait.

What?
Infuse, Plex, vlc to name three.
I am not saying that it revolutionized my life, but it changed how we as a family watch TV. Siri can be useful, fast forward/backward is much faster, loading is faster etc.
And since I have kids, the games are not a bad addition. Ok, it's not Halo 5 but it's still fun to play Crossy Road when you have ten minutes to spare.
For me (a cord cutter), definitely worth the price. I just need Amazon app on it and for me ATV4 is complete.

I reluctantly have to agree. I bought one of these at Christmas and have since found it very disappointing on the whole. I am not crazy about having 4K 'now', however there is more 4K content becoming available with streaming services and as Apple are supporting UHD in their computer and phone line up's it is a hobbled device on those terms.

I have 'older' ATV's and the new one add's nothing really, other than App's which have become a passing fad in my my household.

I would return it myself, if I was in the return's period.
What about games? Not worth it?

I see what you mean by passing fad. I hardly use any apps. I've bought tons in the past, but hit overload. Never really play games (my age is showing). Just a few news apps and much of the news can be had through a browser. Even the photo and camera apps hardly ever get used. I used to get excited by the neat photography stuff when I first got an iPhone 3G, but guess I'm getting lazy and want simplicity. Music, podcasts, Overdrive, various news apps. Twitter (for news).

lol.. sorry my fault.... It was probably me trying it, realized I didn't like it and sent it back.

See.. this is which these products get on the refurb. store so quickly.... We all taking advantage of the 14 day return for "just trying it out" No 'faults' about it.. so u can all blame me now :)
