I've never bought a refurb iPad or iPhone, but I did buy a refurbished Mac Mini to use as a media center in the living room. I expected it to have a couple of scratches or something on it, but it was in pristine condition - I was really impressed.

Apple has quite good quality refurbs as a whole. I doubt the refurbished iPad 3's will have the screen issues we're seeing on the first-run iPad 3's from launch.

I got a refurbished first gen from apple around 6 months after the iPad 2 was released and it came with iPad 2 glass, I could tell cause it had the dot for a camera, but the iPad first gen of course doesn't have one.

It was literally as good as new.

The first-gen iPad does have a dot for the ambient light sensor in the same location.

Refurbs are great but they tend to only appear shortly after the next gen is introduced.

In fact refurbs might be better than factory because the device itself is tested to fix any problems the unit may have whereas factory has no one looking over the device and testing it.

The negatives for buying Refurb:
-No original packaging Apple owners love their boxes. I've got a closet full of them
- Lower Resale Value Buying used is risky enough. But being the 3rd owner? No thanks.
- Peace of mind. Refurbs probably have LESS risk for problems but that wont stop us from saying "its because its a refurb" if something goes wrong.
- Used and Cutting Edge don't feel right. It's pretty weird to want "the latest and greatest" product that someone else owned.
- Genius Bar Geniuses know its a refurb. While standard support is the same, geniuses have the power to bend the rules sometimes. I've noticed they'll be less likely to do that for a refurb rather than a brand new one purchased at that store.

Who told you that? Most returns I've seen/owned have had minor scuffs or signs of use so while Apple does an amazing job at cleaning them off, the chance for a cooties infection still exists.

All refurbished iPad models also include a brand new battery and outer shell.

As far "someone else owned it" the paper you wipe your behind with or wipe your hands and face with was once owned by someone else maybe as a newspaper, meat wrapper or even was covered with puppy dog poop.

Not with iPads. iPad 2 refurbs were available not too long after the 2 came out.

Then why won't so many from like macrumors buy refurbished ones?

Someone already gave you several reasons, so unless you are just looking for a hidden reason you have your answer.

As for me, I always buy refurb Apple gear before new. But refurb 2s weren't available when I bought mine so I bought new.

So to sum up although refurbs are as good as new, but some people just want new.

I returned my VZW iPad 3 32GB. But it DID have a little bit of toilet time with me reading some mags. Enjoy thinking about that when you buy that refurb. :D:p

Well, next time you'll going to use that toiletpaper. Remember that someone cummed on it. Good luck trying to wipe your ass! (A)

Nah but seriously, i'll try and wait a little :) I'm going to ask stores in sweden tomorrow via email xD

When possible, I prefer to buy refurbs (from Apple) over new because I know that someone has at least had a look at it. I have always had excellent luck.

I bought my iMac 24 Aluminum from Apple refurbished and it was perfect plus you're right, apple has their stateside tech crew go through all returns and 99/100 times you will receive a more thoroughly checked out unit.

I would buy a refurbished iPad3 from them in a heartbeat if I could.

Refurb is the way to go! I bought a refurb iPad 2, and it had screen bleed. Took it in a month later, and got a replacement, which has a perfect screen.

I've bought several Apple refurbs over the last 10 years, and every one was indistinguishable from new. You still get a 1 year warranty. The only difference from new is the packaging really.

I've also been lucky buying PCWorld/Currys refurbs that have had more than 6 month's Apple warranty remaining.

Hi! I would like to know what's wrong with a refurbished iPad. I know you can't find any refurbished iPad 3's yet but i know you will soon. If everyone says that a refurbished iPad 3 is like the normal iPad then why won't you people buy it if you can save some money? What's the difference on a refurbished and a not refurbished iPad? How much would this model be if it was refurbished:

iPad 3rd gen, 32 GB, Wi-Fi only, white

English is not my native language so don't complain, i'm trying my best. :)

If you are looking to save money, I'd suggest looking for open boxes at Best Buy. They are typically marked down 10%, less than a month old and most of the time in pretty good shape. You'd still get about 11 months of the original warranty and it will be cheaper than the refurbished model unless it 16GB WiFi model.

You can check www.bestbuy.com to see if your local store has any open boxes.

There is no real downside to Apples refurbs.
My iPad2 I just got had the added perk of being jailbreakable, right from the factory. it was on 5.0.1, well after 5.1 had been released.

I Would Not recommend it, i exchanged my iPad 2 6 Times for Bleeding and got 6 Times a refubished that have the Same error , so whats the Point claiming about a error and get the Same error back

I bought a refurbished Imac when the new 2009 line came out...within 2 years the hard drive went out. Would I buy refurbished again? Probably but not with Applecare, and if I could afford new I surely would. I know maybe the hard drive going out had nothing to do with it being refurbished....but as with my other Apple products I expected a long problem free life from it. I'll think twice before buying refurbished again.

How do you know how many people are or aren't buying refurbished iPad 3s when there are no refurbished iPad 3s to buy yet?

Re: Refurbished iPad 3rd gen

Apple refurbs get a new serial number. Check Apple's FAQ on refurbs.
There is no way to tell a refurb from new except the box it came in.
Same warranty, same service, you can even get the same Applecare.

I have bought many re-furbs from Apple.
The Mac Mini I'm typing on is a refurb.

now that apple has cut the prices again its an even better deal. I still would like to see the new ipad, but this makes the older model more appealing

My MBA was a refurb unit purchased online & it was totally flawless, I haven't had a single problem with the system in the 6 months I've had it, very pleased with the quality.

I purchased an Apple iPad 2 refurb about 2 months ago and it was in solid condition with no issues. I ended up selling it and copping the new iPad.
