Does anyone have educated thoughts based on prior history re when we can expect to see these things discounted as refurbished? I'm not in a rush to buy, but I would like to buy in the next three months and don't want to wait just to have the same price and miss out on three months of use.

iPhone refurbs (2g) showed up about 8 weeks in. I don't know if the iPad will be the same...remember the $100 battery switch-out? I am sure they will build up a pile of refurbished ones to ship out...but...I really don't know

i am curious as well. i might pick one up for my folks if the refurbished price is a nice discount. my guess, however, is that the refurbished price will be about $30 or $40 less then MSRP... not really worth the wait.

They will probably all be iPads with one or two dead pixels in them since everyone is returning theirs.

I'd say soon. I returned mine after a few days for a defect in the overall construction. Many have returned theirs within the 14 days after 4/3 (launch) to get the 3G (or due to buyer's remorse). I'd suspect you'd see them hit after the 3G is released in the US. Why? because the discount may entice people to buy the refurb wifi model instead of the 3G and I'd venture to guess Apple would like to keep 3G sales at the maximum.

I'd say you have at least another month before refurbs show up, maybe longer. With demand so high, returns are probably being turned around into brown box iPads within days.

I'd be very surprised to see Apple dilute early retail iPad sales by offering refurbs so early on, but I'd love to be proved wrong. I've bought Mac mini refurbs for years and many came with unadvertised, free upgrades in RAM and HDD.
would love to buy a refurb 16gb iPad and receive a 64gb one! but that ain't gonna happen with iPads.

Refurbished iPad?

Do you think Apple will ever carry refurbished iPads in their online store? How long do you think it will be?

Want to bet. I have not read a lot of complaints of refurbs being anything but A+ quality. And if it is not, same as new warranty.

Most likely you won't see refurbs till July or August or Sept 2010

The iPad's are like hotcakes!

They sell out quick

One April 30th, an apple specialist told me to come and try my luck at an apple store before the iPad 3G's are sold out!

People are actually liking the iPad

Plus people in Europe, Asia, Africa, Oceania won't be able to get iPad wifi or 3G till May-June!

8 weeks from now will be late June early July.

Apple's Refubished-line products are always restored to original condition, and may have a lower rate for defects since they are checked over thoroughly.

I have stopped trusting refurbished products from anyone. It is probably more bad luck than anything but the 3-4 things I have got refurbed all broke down in weird ways within a couple months.

Apple is different, VERY different. Do you have issues with Apple refurbs, if so, pony up some examples.

I had my first generation iphone exchanged for a refurb, and the same with my 3g. I've never had an issue the refurbs. I would actually think that you have a greater chance having something go wrong with a brand new item than with a refurb. Can't speak for what the ipad refurbs will be like, but based on the iphone refurbs, you shouldn't be able to tell them apart from a brand new one. I don't think apple will release refurbs for several months at least. The ipads are selling like crazy, and the 3g version hasn't even come out yet. They are going to milk the profits from the full price versions most likely until demand levels or dies down, at which time we might see a slight price drop and/or the release of refurbs.

If you followed apple's earnings release this week, the ipad actually hurts their profit margin due to the ipad being a new product with the price of components high initially. (they are making a profit on the ipads, but less of a profit margin than on the ipods/iphones/macs, so it brings down the profit margin ratio) I feel that the refurbs, having been produced, and then repaired/restored again, are marginally profitable, if at all. Sorry for the tangent, I just don't think we'll see refurbs anytime soon.

Refurb Pricing

I'd look for around 10%. Maybe a few more % points at the most. Not enough to wait for....IMO.

Seeing how the iPad is roughly 100 percent profit on the parts, I would be looking for a 25% discount on refurbished units. I wouldn't expect to see any until the end of the summer though.
