Yeah... it sucks... I'm never buying any electronics in LA anymore. It's such a rip off here. What the hell is an $18 recycle fee? Who the F does that go to?

You don't think Arnold's steaks and lobsters pay for themselves do you? hehe, now it goes to Jerry Brown's lobster-fund, haha

Having been a very satisfied Apple refurb customer (MacBook Pro 15", 2010 Mac mini and a 7th gen iPod Classic), they have all been great systems.

My lust for an 11" MBA now gets more intensified. Of course, I would want the 4gb model.

***iPad Comment***

Well, it's cheaper because you really can't do much on it besides play games and make silly drawings.

Gosh, Safari is unable to download files (I know other browsers can, but why?), can't transfer files via USB, no FaceTime, can't add/delete music without being tethered to a "real" computer, and the only apps you can put on it are via Jobs's Babysitting Service. But, yeah, it's cheaper.

This Guy !

I'm replying so others who don't venture down the comments can get a taste of some common sense.

I love this guy !

Damn, I missed out as well. Oh well, I'll wait it out and see what shows up in early 2011. Thanks for relaying the scoop though.

I'm sure they'll refresh it once a week or so. Isn't that how the refurb store usually works?

Yes, refurb store gets new stuff roughly once a week. I've bought 3 items from it, always perfect. Shipping materials are not the 'new' style but are still very good packing. No need for any fear - in fact, the refurb items might actually have higher quality than the new ones.

We also watch the refurb store for clues about new things about to be released. When there are suddenly a variety of iMacs in the refurb store, for example, they can actually be stock that's discontinued because a new model is about to appear. Obviously that's not the case with these Airs.

Man was going to pick up the refurb 11.6 but they are already out... Oh well I guess I'll wait for It to come back haha

The specs on the air are horrible. The only Mac product I do not cosign at all. It's a netbook. Whackness:mad:

Get your facts straight, or use one before you post uninformed drivel. I had a late 2008 15" MBP, with a 2.66 Core Duo, dual video, and 8GB of RAM. My new 2.13 MBA with SSD is sooo much faster than the MBP that I'm still in awe. Everything from browsing, to photo management to startup to word processing to VMWare is super fast on this thing. Heck, I even ran Autocad on it to see how it performs. Very impressed.

It's not about "Raw specs." It's about user experience.

They are popular, like the refrub Mac minis. I had a daily watch for one of those until I finally was able to buy one a month ago.

For a new person that has never done this, forgive me for not being as knowledgeable as you all seen to be. I want to get away from Billy Gates stuff and go Apple. There are a few refurbishments for less than $400 out there. Any helpful tip?????

store.apple.com and go down to the bottom left side of the page and look for the Refurbished links. Best to check links first part of the day as stock can go quick.

he was sarcastically complaining about the prices still being too high (in his opinion).. he should migrate over to the $299 Acer forum.... ;-)

Tho in California where I live, the 10% sales tax still makes it cheaper to buy new from amazon rather than discounted (be it student or refurb) from apple :-(

A little off topic, but for your future reference:

http://www.boe.ca.gov/ads/news06.htm

All purchases require sales tax, whether they be local to CA or an internet transaction from an out of state vendor. It's called the "Use Tax". I don't know if CA actually enforces this law or if it even could. I've come across few residents that are aware of its existence.

You could have put an SSD in your MBP for 1/2 the cost or less than the new MBA and you would have ended up with much better performance.

It depends on how much storage you need. The $100-250 market for SSDs (64-128 GB) has really opened up with many vendors trying to sell off the slightly older stock and get ready for what was launched at CES.

Without 4 gigs of RAM, I wouldn't bite. Is the extra two gigs of RAM worth $250? Check your Activity Monitor and see how much you're floating now. I honestly can't get much done with 2 without noticing some aggravating slowdown, and that's just PHP and MySQL programming. (I've since upgraded my MacBook to 5 gigs).

I agree. I'm using just over 6GB of ram right now. Even the cheap computers you buy at retail now come with 4GB standard from what I've seen.

There is a massive surplus of DRAM supplies as well. Prices aren't going to get much lower than they are right now.

Ah, I haven't looked at small SSDs in awhile. That makes my point even stronger. Had the person spent $250 on an SSD instead of a MBA they would have ended up with better performance.

Yeah, I saw an article the other day about DRAM chips being at new lows.

If my MBP would take 16GB of ram I would do that upgrade today. :)

You'd be able to get something with a SandForce controller at that price and at least 128 GB.

I'm tempted by 8 GB of RAM for $75 on NewEgg. It's sadly DDR3-1333 though.

Why are these available so soon after launch?

Are these just demo machines, or have they been returned to Apple because they didn't work properly? Would be a tad worrying if it was the latter...

People like you still exist? Wasn't that what people said when the first iPhone and iPod were released?

I read a tech article a while back where they tested refurbs and found most to be an excellent value. One of the main points was that refurbs actually get more in depth testing and inspections than the standard new models.
Made some sense to me

They are machines that have been sent back to Apple corporate for whatever reason. They have then been repaired (if appropriate) and completely re-tested before being re-sold.

They could be store demo models (if older models,) they could be "buyers remorse" 30-day-return-policy returns, they could be broken-then-repaired systems. There is no way to know.

Regarding Safari downloading - that is NOT exactly true. I forget the method of how - but I was able to download a 142MB mp3 DJ mix direct from SoundCloud. This file was playable on iPod and also able to be backed up to the Mac. All this on the 3GS 16GB with NO Jailbreak/unlock.
