how often does apple's refurbished site get updated?

I want to dive into apple (probably closer to fall/winter)

at that point, would buying an xs? or xr? or iphone 11 after iphone 12 comes out. I dont need the latest and greatest, but something that is bigger than my 5inch pixel and will get updates for a few years. I even like the X, but at that point its 4 years old

There’s no set ‘time line’ when Apple updates their refurbished section on their site. [But if I had to make a guess, it probably will be updated sometime after the September Keynote.] It really depends on how much allocated stock they have ready for resale with so many units available.

Between the XS and XR, size matters. They’re both great phones, but it depends in terms of what you’re comfortable with. The XR is a fairly hefty phone, but has excellent battery life. However, I probably would opt for the XS, mainly because of the 5.8 overall size.

I’d also recommmend checking eBay for Open Box and Manufacturer Refurbished iPhones. I recently bought an open box XS for just under $500. If you keep your eye out you can sometimes land a pretty good deal on there if you’re up for the risks of eBay purchases.

is that the same as apple refurbished? hesistant with used phones but i know apple puts a new outer body screen, and battery on it so its essentially almost new with not nicks, scratches, etc.

Depends on the seller. The phone typically won’t be as thoroughly refurbished when it’s not Apple doing it. However if you’re open to getting an open box iPhone then you can essentially get a less expensive phone with a low battery cycle and little to no scratches or damage to the casing. Just make sure to read the item description and if you have any questions definitely contact the seller before purchasing.

I've watched the pattern on the UK refurb site and the current stock goes down between 12 - 12:30am and the refresh is usually between 1:30 - 2:00am Monday to Thursday. Friday, Saturday and Sunday don't follow this pattern and are later than these times - I've not been awake to find out exact time.

is the xr fine for a regular user? I did like the smaller size. Will it get supported for maybe 4-5 years?

I get the feeling you've already looked at Apple's Refurb Store for the current X, Xs and Xs Max, which start at $599, $699, and $799, respectively for the 64GB versions. When the iPhone 11 hits the Refurb Store, the X prices will likely drop, but I wouldn't expect significantly. There was recently an iPhone 7 as a clearance item there for (iirc) $499, so I doubt they'd go below that point, but maybe the iPhone 8 would drop that low.

The US Refurb Store usually gets updated at least once a week but not all products are restocked across the board.

I have an Xr and it's a very comfortable size and weight, but definitely larger and heavier than the 7 I upgraded from. I don't know how long from its release in 2018 it will be supported, but I'm hoping to get at least 2 more years from mine.

I have no idea how many more years, but I'd expect it to be much longer than that. I had mentioned 2 more years because I may want new hardware after that point.

XS is £699

Take into account the XS was a former flagship hence the price. Plus the battery might be a little better?

Apple refurb will be my choice, not chancing ebay or Amazon thats for sure.

If you are in the US, WalMart has new iPhone XS units for $400 on installment with Verizon and Sprint. The price is the same for 64gb and 256gb. I picked up a 256gb on Saturday.

for your requirement i am guessing Iphone 11 will be best choice if you need an iphone right away

but if you get into that "wait for few days thing" you can wait for iphone 12 6.1 model which is rumored to be around same price as iphone 11 now
